I am trying to locate detailed instructions for disassembly and reassembly of Dan Wesson 44 mag (744) and 357 mag(715) revolvers. I've read that taking these guns apart for cleaning or refinishing can be a bear. I want to look through the instructions to see if I want to tackle the job myself or give the guns to a gunsmith. Any pointers to books/instructions would be appreciated.

The information you seek is here:

https://www.danwessonforum.com/?page_id=3/reloading/

From personal experience, the small frame DW if very easy to do

https://www.danwessonforum.com/?page_id=3/reloading/tuning-up-your-15-2-the-average-joe-method/

I have not "gone downtown" on my 744 yet, it's probably just a matter of time, I think.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Thank you Steve CT.  I will noodle those posts before I get my hammer out.

Not too bad, follow the instructions, take pics as you go if you're not certain, and hollar if you get stuck:

CF,

Thanks for posting the pictures for comparison! I have a Smith 34 that looks new but it needs some heavier springs and I haven't been brave enough to open it up yet!  I have taken a part my DW's before and it was no problem.

Ron,

The pic you posted of the stripped Dan is the level of disassembly I need. Did you need any special reference manuals to get the trigger assembly as de-segregated as it is in your pics? If a Smith is harder than a Dan then I'm up for stripping the gun down myself.

Thanks guys.

No special tools, no special manuals.  Just common sense and a good eye.  When I first started detailed disassembly of firearms, I took a lot of pictures in order to put things back together correctly.  I'll try to dig up the old magazine articles I found on DW disassembly an email them to you.

Found them in the Archive Tab under articles (go figure):

  • Dan Wesson Adaptable Wheelguns
  • A Massive New Dan Wesson .44
  •

    That should help.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....
