I recently purchased what I know is a 1911, but don't know anything about it other than that. On the side it says Dan Wesson Firearms, Norwich NY U.S.A. XS4109 On the barrel where casings are ejected, it says .45 ACP and MATCH The left side of the gun says XSS. I paid 800 for it, any info would be great.

Pictures from both sides of the gun would go a long way towards identifying it.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Looks like a Point man 7-45 to me but am at a loss to explain the XSS designation.  Maybe an experimental handgun that leaked out?

There's a lot of PM-7 there, but the fixed rear sight, two tone hardware, and maybe the checkered front strap don't fit with a PM-7. The grips are probably not DW standard, but they may be original from the factory on special order.

DW Norwich has always made special custom guns, the S/N sort of supports this being a Factory Custom Pointman.

At $800, my info is "Damn, You Done Good!!!"

Well, I guess I learned something, even the old guys should search the site every once in a while:

XS = Model XS (similar to Panther; often referred to as ‘XSS’ as it was a stainless gun).

https://www.danwessonforum.com/archive/models-2/1911-pistols/

My PM-9 has front strap checkering, so I think that was either standard for one or three years but the two tone is probably aftermarket or custom ordered parts, I agree.

These were an entry level 1911 models so I would think the blue components and frontstrap checkering  were added at some point, not stock but looks nice!

You know, that whole "old guy" reference is:

-hurtful

-age discrimination

-again, hurtful

-AND True

If I was not so old, I'd have remembered to look before I commented

BUT, I got the bottom line right on this gun, it's smokin' deal at $800. DW's "entry level" is every other manufacturers step just below Factory Custom.

I was only referencing the old guy in the mirror...  AND you are correct- a very good deal, indeed.

Great info guys, I appreciate the responses and helping me know I did not get taken advantage of. Any recommendations of where to get extra magazine or what kind of magazine to get?

Any government model .45 ACP magazine should work.  Just remember- you get what you pay for, generally.  Stick with name brand and you should be GTG.  CDNN investments is a great place to start looking.

I have very happily used Chip McCormick Shooting Star magazines for about 5 years. A very heavy duty user might be happier with Power Mags, but CMC magazines are the real deal

http://www.cmcmags.com/index.html

BTW, they can frequently be found at better prices online from re-sellers or locally
