My local gunstore has a DW stainless 1911 for around $1500. It had adjustable sights, match grade barrel, and was overall very very nice. I stupidly forgot to write the model number down but hopefully some of you gurus will know the one I am referring to. Is this a good gun, and is DW customer service OK?

New/current manufacture?
New/older manufacture?
Used?
Really need the Model, BUT: My opinion 2-3 years ago was that DW 1911 was the very best value to be found in the 1911 market, bar none. Excellent quality at a great price.
My opinion now is excellent quality at a premium price, especially at $1500.
I have a great DW 1911, if I was in the 1911 SS Target model market, I'd be on a Springfield Armory Loaded:

Then buy $500 worth of ammunition
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I agree. Unless it's a spankin' new 2011 VBOB, I'd probably keep looking for the same gun for at least a couple hundred less.
As Steve let on...the DW's model (year manufactured/new vs. used) can affect the price outcome greatly. Currently, the sale of 1911's commands 99.9% of DW's current firearm production, so that leaves a whole lotta grey area these days, where value is concerned.
Now purely looking at "the best bang for the buck" standpoint, a DW 1911 will stand toe-to-toe with many of the top 1911's currently on the market. Although my current DW 1911 is an older gun...a "pre-CZ" .45ACP, model PMA-B, and I absolutely love it!! This gun has taught me a lot.
Plus it looks good with my 'tactical range eyewear'...

Well, I've been looking at 1911s off and on since the 1980s. I am, however, not very familiar with Kimbers and Dan Wessons, and I was surprised when I found that these two brands came closest to my criteria.
By the way, I live in the People's Republic of California, and many selections available elsewhere cannot be gotten here.
The Dan Wesson 1911 I am considering is brand spanking new, stainless finish, match-grade stainless barrel and adjustable sight. About the only think that falls short of perfection on the gun is that the sights are black iron; no 3-dot sight or white framing sight on the rear. Oh well, I have shot well with such sights in the past.
Anyway, I am seriously considering "pulling the trigger on the DW today. Pictures after 10 days if I do. Comments still welcome, particularly comments comparing the Kimbers to the Dan Wessons.

That CA crap certainly makes things a lot tougher. Is the DW Marksman (2010, discontinued) CA legal? If so, there is one locally for about $1200 IIRC. Stainless Gov't model, adjustable sights
