I am new to this site and really have not had much experience with this gun, I bought it a few years back and have not shot it much more than 50 rounds. So here is my problem, I went to the range tonight and shot about 100 rounds through it and every time I emptied a mag the slide did not stay open. I probably have the thing assembled incorrectly and was hoping someone may give me a clue. Thanks in advance for not clubbing me over the head about missing something completely obvious....

Squidlo,
It probably is the mag. Check and see if the mag follower is lifting the slide lock when its empty. The mag spring may be weak or the follower may just miss the lock all together. Have you tried other mags? Put an empty mag in the gun and slowly pull back the slide and see what happens. It should catch the slide lock and hold the slide open. I'm certainly no expert but I believe that is the best place to start. There are guys here much more knowledgeable than me and I am sure they will jump in as soon as they find the post. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
And by the way, welcome to the group, there are a lot of helpfull people here.

Squidlo- You're dealing with a not uncommon 1911 problem that needs some basic diagnostics. Excuse me if I ask real basic questions, but if your problem is only on last round lockback, you likely are not dealing with an assembly problem.
1) Make sure your pistol is CLEAN and well lubed
2) Are you using more than one magazine? If the problem follows only one of several magazines, it is likely a magazine problem. If you have just one magazine, invest in a couple more good quality magazines, I like Chip McCormack Power Magazines, Wilson Combat mags are very good as well
3) If the problem occurs with many/most magazines, it is likely a slide stop problem, possibly magazine release problem.
If you are new to 1911's, check out the two 1911 Forums listed on the right side of our Forum page. They both have lot's of 1911 info and diagnostics, 1911.org has some great animated/video resources on assembly/disassembly, and how the 1911 functions.

The good news is, if your 1911 cycles, feeds, fires, extracts, and ejects properly, and shoots accurately, and your only problem is last round lockback, you're going to fix this pretty easily, with perhaps a magazine, slide stop, slide stop plunger, or magazine release replacement, and maybe just a good detail cleaning. 1911's are so much fun!

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Steve, Thanks for the Info. I was using a couple of different mags one being the Chip McCormickthat came with the gun. I gave it a very thorough cleaning and will check the slide stop and mag release as you mentioned. I am also planning to spend more time in the forums you mentioned. Thanks again for the info, it's nice to fund a group like this with people willing to help.

Dave- One small thing to check on this type problem is the spring/plunger that contacts the rear of the slide stop. If it is not moving freely, that could be the problem

Pretty easy to fix. The exact part you are looking for is the magazine retainer which we always seem call a magazine release. Brownells and Midway will both have a big selection, and this is a very easily replaced part. You even get to shop for classy new magazine "release" button too.
