I spent a lot of time today with a gun I've had for about 4 years, and there was no shooting involved. It's been a very long time since I did a complete dis-assembly/cleaning on the most accurate centerfire pistol I've ever owned, the pre-CZ PM-1S. I've had it for over 4 years, cost me about $650 (I think), and I've had posts/pictures here before. It is my second, and now only 1911, and it was calling out to me from the safe for some attention.

This gun is an early enough DW 1911 that it uses the DW interchangeable front sight setup. You may think that's pretty cool, but it does not stand up well to the shock of a 1911 slide cycling, and regularly comes loose. In order to Locktite the sight screw, I needed to pull and break down the slide. Since I can't just go partway on something like this, with the help of Patrick Sweeny's Book of the 1911, and the Internet, we went "downtown". With the exception of the rear sight, no part of this gun went untouched.

The 2 piece FLGR was a challenge, because I'm a 1911 moron, but we got beyond that with plenty of Internet help. Fortunately, there is no Series 80 nonsense in here! I also spent some time working on the mag release to help it accept Chip Cormack mags (it was a little picky about mags) and replaced the recoil spring, just because.

Along with a very detailed cleaning and lube, I did some scrubbing with a white ScotchBrite, which really just did a deep clean and light burnishing on the slide and frame, and I reinstalled a pair of custom Aluma-Grips my son had made for my birthday right after I got this gun.

Above and beyond the fact that this is a DW and a 1911 (the best of both worlds) the sights are perfect for me-adjustible white outline rear with a post, and Patridge front with a white dot. When I do my part (rarely) it shoots the lights out.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Nice story! It's the sentimental value sometime that we appreciate so much.

Steve,

Great post and very Cool Pistol.  Thanks for the cool-pics.  I did not know about the early front sight interchangability, very educational.

Wisdom is merely the realization of how little one knows, therefore I am wise.

Very nice Dan there, good to spend time with an old friend like that. I still don't have a DW brass-flinger, but I am supposed to get one in a trade early May. Really looking forward to it.

Sorry to be misleading, I've put about 2K rounds thru this gun. This was the first time in about 2 years that I've taken it down to the itty bitty parts, and I spent a fair amount of time reacquainting myself with the genius of John Moses Browning. I have not shot it a lot lately, but better weather is coming and I've committed to using the local outdoor range more ($20 for all day on weekdays). I can easily shoot a lot of rimfire, and I've sort of ignored the big boys, and especially my AR lately.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
