If you are serious about doing a DIY 1911 upgrade, start with Brownell's 1911 catalog. There is a new one out in the past two weeks, it's free, and chock full of great 1911 stuff.
I sat on the sidelines while my son built up a Springfield Armory LW Commander for me. I had accumulated some 1911 goodies over the years, and had a Brownells Gift Certificate to help finish it off. Working on 1911's is pretty easy once you educate yourself, and remember to go slow.
All that said, the only possible change I would make on my pre-CZ PM1S would be to replace the two piece guiderod, which is not a permanent change.
Barrel bushing sometimes needs some fitting and filing. Check out the Cylinder and Slide 1911 action kits as well.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
