Hey guys, I've decided to get a Specialist in 45 and I'm really excited, but I have quite the internal dilemma going on regarding the coating.
I first want to say, I honestly like the look of the stainless a whole lot better. I'm not sure why, as I usually prefer black over a silvery look, but I just do. With that being said, I'm worried I might not be making the right decision if I choose to pass up the coating.
My concerns: first, I'm not sure if I'm going to like how a stainless wears. I know it scratches easier than something with a coating, but will it really show the mars very prominently? If I did mess someting up, could I just take a bead blaster to the area and fix it up? second, I'm concerned about rust. Do the stainless guns have anything to prevent corrosion? I mean, I won't be taking it in the ocean with me, but my Kimber 1911 coating is s*** and when it scraped off, rust started to appear. third, I won't be able to go back and decide on a black coating. I know the Duty Coat or whatever they use is the best out there, and I won't be able to get anything close to it through cerakoting or anything else.
So... What do you guys think? Despite not liking the look, should I get a black one? Price really isn't the concern here. For guys who have stainless Dan Wessons of any kind, do you have any regrets? How has it been working out for you?
THANKS GUYS! EXCITED FOR MY FIRST DAN WESSON!

Mine is stainless, no issues. I like the stainless look and it can be fixed easier than a scratch on blue or coated finish. If you take reasonable care of the gun, rust should not be a problem. Oil it now and then.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

When it comes to SS vs blued on any gun I am willing to go a tiny bit more $$$$ for stainless since the finish wear factor is negated......blued will wear a lot more and easier going in and out of a holster and such.
Blued.....if I get a scratch or bump I clean it up of oils and use a Sharpie and dab let dry and dab again let dry and wipe down with you favorite cloth.

If you do bead blast a stainless gun do not use medium that has been used on a blue gun. Or steel wool or scotch Brite that has been used on a blue gun. It can leave microscopic particles of carbon steel in the stainless that enables corrosion.
Agreed, and also flitz does a lot for scratches in SS.
If I were going to blast a blued gun for refinishing I would use walnut shells

To me, because of the rail, the Specialist looks like a Tactical weapon. Tactical weapons are most often black.
Stainless is invigorating, and will tend to calm the tactical ambiance the Specialist seems to project.
Black is elegant, and evokes suspense and danger.
What image do you want your pistol to project?
