I must admit going in on this, I may be reacting badly
http://www.al.com/news/index.ssf/2014/08/video_shows_instructor_moments.html
Is there any reasonable situation in which a 9 year old is shooting an Uzi? It was evidently a "family event", the parents were videotaping this, possibly to include in this year's Christmas video?
I apologize upfront if I offend OR violate any Forum rules.
Who puts a full auto Uzi in the hands of a 9 year old? I've never shot something like this, I am old (and wise) enough??? to know that I would need to be pretty damn careful. Nobody in this whole situation was careful or sensible. One person dead, and a nine year old who grows up dealing with the fact that she killed someone, or not caring that she killed someone.
This is all, tragically, LOSE/LOSE
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

That is a truly sad situation that could have repercussions for us all.

Assuming one were going to allow a nine year old to fire this weapon to begin with, you'd think they'd let her fire only one round to see how she reacted…..not start with a full auto burst. Even grown men have been known to lose control of full auto weapons. The stupid was pretty thick ……..
As ese927 alludes too, the anti gunners will be foaming at the mouth over this incident.
Just my opinion, and yes, I've fired quite a few auto weapons from Ma Deuce on down.

I know that my Topic title was pretty aggressive, and thanks to everyone who did not confront me on this, but
We have a firearms trainer who though this made sense. It's tragic how this turned out, nobody even remotely interested or involved feels anything except a deep sense of loss.
The firearms we are entrusted with can cause great injury.
Our responsibility is to reduce/eliminate the injury

I agree whole heartedly Steve, and I kinda understand where the trainer was coming from, I think children should learn to handle a weapon. His mistake was not letting the child fire some single round shots first. I think he would have seen her hands were to small to even hold on to that uzi. Very unfortunate mistake on his part. I pray for the mans family. I do also, believe like some other folks here that it will become an issue for a lot of folks, as happened in your home state, when it was a lunatic and not just a gentleman trying to do a good thing. I do hope the folks at that range or club which ever, look at how and when each learning child is capable to take on. We should all give a moment of silence for them.

I'm not going to worry in the least about stepping on toes about this...
For anyone to put a fully auto pistol in the hands of a 9 yr old girl...she would have had
to be an exception that is one in a million, shooting since five, training for the U.S. team,
had tens of thousands of rounds of large caliber (or larger than .22) under her belt...
And even then I doubt most would agree with it.
All this is doubtful, she most likely may have shot once or twice before...maybe never...
and sadly ....never again ! The parent's and the shooting range are complete and utter idiot's ...period.
A man is now dead and a small child is scarred for life ...as Zoommb said ...stupidity..
And like others said, Liberal's and Anti's will be coming out of the wood work. Even though statistically the instances
versus millions of legal gun owner is much lower than say...death of High School football...we will be dragged thru
the proverbial mud.

I agree that giving the girl a gun set on full auto was a pretty stupid move. My first thought when I heard this news was "this should be on this year's Darwin awards".
We all have our moments of stupidity, where we don't think a situation all the way through, I have had plenty of my own through the years. Unfortunately, this one was a doozy. I do feel sorry for the little girl, she knew no better.

My wife and I went to Scottsdale, AZ several years ago to visit my cousin and her husband and had the opportunity to shoot an UZI at a range. We both were able to handle the UZI safely but you certainly knew this wasn't something to take lightly! I have to agree with Blacktop there is no way that I would let me daughter (and she's intelligent enough to know better) handle a firearm like this. And as Steve stated in the original post we now have a nine year old who must live the rest of her life dealing with the fact that she took someone's life. This will sure affect her and probably at some point her view of her parents for allowing her to be in a situation where this could happen. The instructor also had children so they will live the rest of their lives with a father.
As parents it's our responsibility to protect and educate our children, in this case this parents failed. We have an issue in this country where common sense is being lost. This was preventable...
