Since America seems hell bent on removing, editing, and fixing every bit of it's history, I believe that Mount Rushmore must be changed to remove George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Let's also not overlook the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial...

I'm sure there is much more that must be done to fix (improve) history, this seems to be a good start...

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Perhaps even redact that little unpleasantness back in 1776?

Nothing new .. even in ancient Egypt, a Pharaoh would have his stonemasons go all around the country with the mission to chisel off any mention of a previous Pharaoh that he didn't like, from all the monuments, obelisks, tablets, etc.

Interestingly, with today's technology, they can scan the altered item and determine what was originally there before it was obliterated .. so take that you asshole mummy !

It's long been known that the victors write history, not the losers, so history is already prejudiced anyhow.

One civic minded soul has pointed out that George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson and Ben Franklin were all slave owners.

He feels it his patriotic duty to collect all $1, $2, $20 and $100 dollar bills from all those shamed by our forefathers. He promises to see they are disposed of in a proper fashion.

I understand what you are trying to say, but I beg to differ. Almost every single person who is ranting and raving in protest of Confederate monuments are NOT the losers. In fact, not only were they not even born in the same century as the conflict, but neither were their parents.

So I ask you, how are they involved ?

I try not to get involved with political issues, the bottom line to me is what ever history was it cannot be changed.  Why try to bury it, take it down, hide from whatever facts you do not like.  History is what is!  They were all people right or wrong in their beliefs and standing up for them isn't that what America is all about?

I think you are (perhaps intentionally) missing the point of the comment.

It has far less to do with the confederacy than loosing to Trump. The flags & statues are just a random target to express the hate  Fear & loathing.

Nope, not intentionally missing your point ... but you are correct that I did not understand. I had no idea that you were saying all the controversy over Confederate monuments is actually related to liberal hate of Trump.

Not intending to add Fuel to the Fire, would the statement "All Lives Matter" be the best possible statement for all Americans to adhere to? Native American, Hispanic, White, Asian, Muslim ...

America is a World leader and has a moral responsibility to do the Right Thing. The Right Thing includes the "Right Thing" for America today. tomorrow, and looking to the future

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”  If we are not aligned with this, then I guess the Statue of Liberty needs to go away too, but that statement was drafted in a very different time.

You know what? I am conflicted to know what the right path is.

The really sad part of all of this controversy is that these "tear down, re-name, destroy" initiatives will have NO substantial impact on peoples lives today.

It makes sense to educate people about the successes and failures of the past, and build on the success, but educating people that demolishing inanimate objects changes nothing.

Thoughtful people learn from the past, angry people live in the past

Steve, your last sentence is the best commentary I have ever heard on this type of topic.  Thank you.

Thanks for the comment.

In fairness, sometimes even a blind squirrel finds a nut laugh

Just one more observation from a guy with a lot of miles on the odometer, trying to figure out how to live the rest of the miles he hopes to have.

I understand your sentiments completely, Steve.

If our founding fathers were to return to us today I often wonder what they would think about what our nation has become? They were honorable men with honorable ideas and I think they would wonder how we got lost.

Many among us wish to hide our history which they consider offensive. Over the years a chief criticism of post-war Germany has been the lack of recognition of Nazism within their history. Certainly there is a vast distinction between America and Nazi Germany...but the idea of hiding the shame smacks of the same flavor.

We are a great nation. But...I am sad for the generations that follow.
