This is one of the saddest examples of...something...not sure what.
"LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO SPEND IT WITH AN UGLY GUN!" - John Taffin

Years back I had a non-shooter ask me how accurate my custom Win 700 was. Rather than try to explain sub MOA accuracy I put it into layman's terms with a visual reference. Told him that if he held a cigarette pack between first finger & thumb I could put 10 rounds though it without hitting his hand at 100yds.
We made a photocopy of him doing just that & I scored a 10 round 3/4"" group @100yds. None touched the image of his hand.
Would I have actually shot at his hand? Of course not, but then again I'm not an ID10T!

Play Stupid Games, Earn Stupid Prizes!
I can't feel bad about any part of this. The sole purpose was to gain fame and notoriety, and it worked. There really are people who should not have guns. The damage done to legal, law abiding, intelligent gun owners from something like this is beyond belief.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

And another pile of fodder for the anti-gun fodderettes.
I can see that my comment was fairly insensitive. OTOH, maybe the kids end up with a better home life and upbringing. Trying to envision kids growing up in a life where this kind of stupidity happens.

Another Darwin Award winner.
These idiots have watched too many movies and youtube videos.
If they had shot at a four inch thick medical textbook with a .22 short MAYBE it would have been able to stop the round. OTOH if they shot at a copy of 'what men know about women' with a .45, well that wouldn't end well.
I just read the article, they shot at an encyclopedia with a .50 Desert Eagle! Well damn, that was an order of magnitude beyond stupid.
Why didn't they shoot at just the book and see what would happen FIRST?
This is sad, stupid and senseless.

Yeah, this is an old thread but . . .
John Pepper, creator of the Pepper Popper, told me that when he was a kid, he'd shoot apples out of friends' outstretched hands. When he joined the NRA he learned that was not a good idea and stopped the practice. His friends were upset that he wouldn't shoot at them anymore.

They did. "Perez had done a trial-run before and the bullet didn't completely pierce through the book, so he thought the thickness of the encyclopaedia would protect him."

When I was in college (mid-late 70s) a chapter of the Pershing Rifles military fraternity came under scrutiny after a pledge died. They had strapped a piece of plywood to a pledge's chest and stabbed it with a bayonet. Apparently, they had done this one too many times and the bayonet went through the wood and killed the kid.
