I was looking through some old material and found this ad from the IHMSA paper. It is from March 1986 and it gives some info on the newer DW sights. Figured the info may help someone who was curious what sight they had. It is printed here verbatim from the paper.
"Important Information on Dan Wesson Sights
As virtually all IHMSA members know, Dan Wesson redesigned and created their own silhouette sights which are superior to anything offered by the industry on a standard production revolver.
This new precision target sight, designated as the RS-4D was first installed on the 40V8S .357 Super Mag when it was first introduced in mid-1983, and has remained standard on this model ever since. The performance of the 40V8S has spoken for itself in the silhouette game. The new sights have been an integral part of its success.
Eventually, the new rear sight was installed on all Dan Wessons, model by model as the supply became available. The first bit of important news is how to recognize the new rear sight: With the gun pointed away from you, you will note a small allen screw on the right side of the sight just in front of the rear blade. Also, the elevation screw will be a slotted screw. The older original DW sights do NOT have the allen screw or slotted head elevation screw.
Here is the next bit of important information: Any Dan Wesson .44 gun in blue finish with a serial number UNDER B023200 takes the same new style sight as the .357 Super Mag, the RS-4D. Any blue DW with a serial number of B023200 and OVER takes the RS-3D (if the gun is not already equipped with the new precision sight.) The RS-3D is the same new style precision sight as the RS-4D except it has a slightly shorter base.
If you have a Stainless DW .44, serial number UNDER SB008125, it will take the RS-4D. If the serial number is OVER SB008125. It takes the RS-3D.
On the DW model .41 in blue, serial numbers UNDER C02175 takes the RS-4D. OVER C02175 takes the RS-3D. For the Stainless .41 UNDER SC002354 takes the RS-4D and OVER SC002354 takes the RS-3D.
All the older Dan Wesson .357 Magnums and .22s on the .357 Mag frame take the RS-3D. Simply check your sights as described above. If it has the allen screw on the right, just in front of the rear blade and a slotted head elevation screw, then you DO have the new type target sight. Otherwise you have the OLD sight.
Normally, both the RS-4D and RS-3D come from the factory with the .120 wide rear notch blade, but as virtually all silhouette shooters prefer the .080 wide rear notch, we have ordered all our DW sights from the factory with the .080 rear notch.
Likewise, of the front silhouette patridge blades offered by Dan Wesson, the .100 wide front blades are preferred to go with the .080 rear notch.
We offer the full range of Patridge-type front blades for Dan Wessons as follows, PLUS the RSB-D .080 rear notch blade as a separate item (for guns having the new style rear sight, but equipped with the wider .125 rear notch).
All Patridge front blades and the .080 RSB-D rear blade are available from THE SILHOUETTE as a member cost of $7.50 each.
PS-1, .123 wide, .285 high (mostly used with the .125 rear notch)
PS-2, .100 wide, .275 high (mostly used with the .080 rear notch blades.)
PS-5, .100 wide, .300 high (used with the .080 rear notch blades.)
PS-6, .100 wide, .350 high (used with the .080 rear notch blades.)
Your choice of either the RS-4D or the RS-3D rear sight assembly for the member price of $32.50
For a complete set, the rear sight assembly, either the RS-4D or the RS-3D (whichever rear sight you gun will take) and your choice of any of the above listed Patridge-type front blades, sent FIRST CLASS MAIL, send your check for $38.50 to THE SILHOUETTE, Box 1509, Idaho Falls, ID 83401, or phone 208-524-0880.
