I have a 3o year old plus 744VH in 8".  Stopped shooting one day and the cylinder was locked.  I got the gun disassembled to find that the shaft at the bottom of the hand that goes through trigger had snapped off.

I ordered a replacement from DW (#38 on the drawing) and got a small bag with a new hand and a new shaft, but in two pieces.  If I had to guess, it looks as though I just need to press the shaft in to the appropriate hole in the hand.  Is this correct?  Am I about to destroy something by doing this?  Usually I break the first replacement part while learning how to do the repair.  Hopefully, you guys can help me with this and I won't have to buy a second piece.

The crane lock (#42 in the drawing) was also broken into two pieces, so I ordered a replacement.  The part I got seems to be too big - it won't quite slide into the slot in the end of the crane.  Is there some fitting process I need to use to get this to fit?

I live near Myrtle Beach, SC, and have not been able to find any gunsmith that knew much about the 744.  I'm hoping I can get these repairs done with a little help from this forum.

I used to love shooting this gun, and would appreciate any help that is available!

Thanks!

I'm having a hard time picturing what you are describing.  If you could post pictures, it would help.

In the meantime- this may help.

Ron

On the 8th picture down, it shows a side view of the trigger.  The hand connects to the trigger via a shaft at the bottom end of the hand.  The shaft looks as though it was pressed into the hand and then inserted into the trigger.

THanks!

Also, if you look at the parts diagram, #38 shows a small shaft going through the hand and protruding to the right at the bottom of the hand.  It is this shaft that broke on my gun.  The shaft came from DW as a separate piece, and was not pressed into the hand.

THanks!

How about that.  In my mind, I never saw them as two separate parts.  I'd guess that you should go ahead and press fit them together.  Then my next question would be- are you proficient in shaping hands to time cylinder rotation?  If not, you may want to take the revolver to a competent gunsmith or send it to DW for that.  I assume you have an FFL or are a gunsmith, otherwise they shouldn't have shipped the hand to you, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

File the crane lock with a flat file until you get the fit correct- no issue with that.

Kind of odd to have those pieces broken.

I bought the gun used a long time ago, and never had the slightest bit of trouble with it.  I used factory ammo and carefully made hand-loads for many years.

As far as timing the cylinder lock -- I wouldn't know how.

Sounds like the best plan is just to send it back to DW and let them repair it.

I would love to do the repair myself, but it sounds like I'm in a bit over my head.

Thanks for the advice!  I appreciate your comments and guidance.

Large frame Hand with pin installed.  superdan helped me with this on my large frame. these are his instructions.

place hand on flat surface (bench block)so hand is fully supported, get pin started straight & drive it in. It won't go all

the way, so you will have to file the last little bit. Then you will have to do the final fitting on the hand.
