Hey guys, need some info. I found a 740 .357 SM 8VH in a Pawn shop for $699.00. All I could do was look at it in the case as the girl at the counter said she was not allowed to take it out and show it to me. I know how to check the timimg and lock up, but what else should I be looking at. I know that there was an issue with the forcing cone, but I don't know for sure what to look at, any one got pictures? The SN is X00052 and the price tag said it was a first issue. Doesn't mean much to me. Is First Issue something that adds to the value. The gal behind the counter also didn't know if it had papers or a box or extra barrels. I would like to snag this before someone else does, but I need to be sure I am not buying a problem.

Not a bad price for a 357 max," First Issue " means first run of that model from Norwich,NY plant this should be marked on frame and barrel which makes this a great deal, I don't think forcing cone would be an issue with this one, if you don't take it let me know where it's at.

Flame cutting will be a groove across the top strap at the cylinder gap. A little groove is normal, a really deep groove means it has been punished a lot (It happens when guys load really light bullets at super velocities). Normally the groove only goes so far and stops. It can be an indicator of how much the gun has been used.

SMKYTXN - Thanks for the pic. I thought that was what LB was talking about, but I am Pretty thick and pic's are worth a thousand words to me. Thanks all for the help. I will be able to look at it with with an eagle eye and know what I am looking at. It says Norwich CT. on the frame and the SN is X00052, so I guess this was the 52nd .357 SM out of Norwich, right? I guess that makes it a first issue, Right? Someone please chime in. Should I seriously consider this for my second DW?

Burt,
I think First Issue was while Bob Serva owned Dan Wesson Firearms, Second Issue was after CZ bought it. Either way, everybody says Norwich guns are very well made and finished, in my opinion that is an excellent price for it. But I bet the pawn shop has a little room for negotiation too.
Everybody should own at least one Supermag
