I just got this 744VH. Maybe someone can explain the markings and such on this. The following all came in the original box. In the picture the revolver is wearing a 4" setup. On the right side of the picture is a regular 6" barrel. On the left is a 6" ported barrel and shroud. In the foreground are extra front sights, a feeler gage, and a barrel wrench still wrapped in paper. In the rear is an extra grip and the original box. Now, on the left side of the 4" barrel shroud, it has DW, circled, in front of the ejector rod. Towards the muzzle on the right side the lug is marked with Dan Wesson's signature. Under the Dan Wesson "signature" the lug is marked in cursive " First Issue". The signature and "First issue" are surrounded by leaved branches with the number 842 underneath. The 6" ported barrel is stamped DAN WESSON ARMS and .44 MAGNUM CTG. on the right side lug near the cylinder. Each barrel has it's own nut. This revolver "package" looks like it is brand new. It is really
clean. Besides the obvious, I am wondering if anyone can explain what these various markings mean. I think this " package" was pieced together over time, but any info on the items would help. I don't have a clue on the value either... I do know I like it. A lot.DWF Supporters

Looks like the 6" barrel was on gun originally unless the gun is also marked first issue. We would need to see a pic of the other side of the gun. I think the 4" barrel was bought at a later date the first issue guns were rare and that barrel is worth extra $$$$ If the gun is marked First Issue also then it's rare and a very nice sought after gun. The serial number of the gun should match the serial number stamped on the barrel by the First Issue stamp if the gun is in fact a First Issue. Add a pic from the other side of the gun and more info will come.
The 6"BA, frame, box, grip on the box, tool are Monson pre 1991. The grip on the gun is a Palmer grip post 1991. They had gold plastic medallions instead of brass. The 4"VH First Issue BA is only worth more than any other 4"VH BA if you have the numbered First Issue frame. The First Issue mark is under the grip on the right side but I seriously doubt the frame is a Norwich First Issue.
