I'd been looking for a stainless .44 Mag revolver for awhile but not finding anything that jumped out at me. Saw a listing on TGT (Texas Gun Traders) for a Dan Wesson with accessories at a nearby gunstore and called about it. After handling it and working on the price a little, it came home with me. It came with the tools, 5 speedloaders, speedloader holder, holster and snapcaps...all in a soft case. It's a Palmer gun, which I gather aren't held in as high regard as the Monson guns but it's a great shooter.
My buddies have Redhawks and Model 29's with similar barrel configs and it's quickly apparent how overbuilt the 744 is in comparison...just feels like a lot more steel. I also note how low the hammer rides on the frame vs. those others.
I'm still looking for a 6" "Light" (half lug) barrel and have reached out to Genny but would prefer a "Rolled" rather than laser marked shroud.

Congrats on that score.
BTW All the large frame and Supermags were built in Palmer, despite Monson roll Mark's on the early ones. So dont feel you have a less desirable gun.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

If a man designed it, and a man built it, then a man can fix it.

Scorpio is correct. In fact, the Palmer Era was known for its bluing. I think Palmer stainless guns had a less brushed look too. JMHO.
You are absolutely correct about the robustness and extra steel compared to the competition. A 4" Model 29 is no fun to shoot.
I agree about finding a Palmer or Monson shroud. Preferably a Palmer, although they were all made at the Palmer factory as far as I know.
