Well this past Saturday I finally bought an Model 40. I went to my local gun shop about 2 months ago. I gotten an P938 and was talking to him. Told him I was looking for an Dan Wesson. He told me he had one in the back> He went to the bank and gotten the box out and showed me. I was surprised about it. My wife enjoyed it, even though she isn't a gun person. Well I asked him if he wanted to sale it, he informed me that he might keep and. He didn't know what he wanted for it. Well after a month of negotiating & talking he finally gave me a price. Told him I will take it in mid-Aug, after I move in my new house. Well the day after opening day of squirrel hunting I went down & picked it up. For $700 I think I gotten a good deal. I unwrapped the extra barrel it had an date of 1979. Now he has an Remington Derringer from the 1920's in 41 Rimfire I am interested in.

FYI-many of those rust inhibiting wrappers were New Old Stock at DW. The Large Frame DW was introduced in late 1980, the Supermags came out a little later, my guess on yours is probably about 1981-82
A very nice, clean looking Model 40
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

That's true...I think there may have been more than a few wrapper boxes they pulled from on the assembly line. For example, my unfired model 40 ( #E003925) had these wrappers in the styrofoam box, dated Feb 1982...
And the gun, just in case there isn't enough gun porn in this thread.
They used those wrappers with all DW models during that time period. So unfortunately, these days it's hard to nail down a manufacture date based soley on the wrappers. Your wrappers were likely from an older box (or three) that landed in one person's (or maybe an area, not necessarily ONE person) assembly area at the time. I mean...geez, from a bean counter's view, they still perform their function, why not use them?
Regardless, congrats on your cool find! You chose wisely.
