There is another thread on confusing barrel lengths, so I thought I'd put this in its own topic.  I have a Palmer 7445 with an unusual barrel (at least to me).  It measures 5 3/8" from cylinder face to the end of the shroud.  It is slotted but has no rib of any kind, no vent, not solid either.  Instead, it has a full length 'sight plane' I'll call it, that is secured by three screws.  I assume it was made to be removable for scope installation. I don't know what's under it as I haven't taken it off yet.  Perhaps the shroud is slotted for a sight blade but I doubt it due to the height difference.  If the attachment is removed, the top of the shroud would be about 1/4" or so lower than the top strap.  I'll post a few pics to illustrate. 012.JPGImage Enlarger

Hmm I have not seen anything like that one before. I am only guessing, but to me it looks like a longer barrel assembly that was cut down and had the vent rib millled off. Then the screw on rib added to mount the front sight back on. Why I do not know. Perhaps a previous owner tried some kind of custom scope mounting that did not work out?

I would really have to see the revolver in person to figure out what you have. Maybe fire a few shots thru it.....

I'd also put my money on it being a longer assy. that was modified and cut down.  The slots and markings line up exactly with all of my slotted shrouds.  If nothing like that has been documented from the factory before it would lead to the belief that it was customized by someone, for some reason, that we'll probably never know.  Maybe the front end of the barrel assy was damaged and was modified to save it.  Or maybe someone just plain wanted to do their own thing with it.  It looks like they did a pretty nice job on it though....I like it.

I agree with the others, custom job.  Maybe it needs test fired to be sure, hint, hint.  Maybe it too is a flamethrower!

Well Lonwolf93 and Supermagfan, we will have to try this one out together laugh.  I don't know if the pics show it but the Palmer roll mark is present in the correct spot and the underlug has that slightly milled down factory offset thing like the 44mags had for weight reduction.  If this was cut down, it must have been done from the front end.  But wouldn't that cause problems with the barrel nut having some place to seat?  I'm going to email the guy I got it from, think he was the original buyer, see what he says.  He was an IHMSA shooter back in the day and competed with this gun some from what he told me.  I'll let you know.

OK, I just got an email back from the guy I got this gun from.  He said he bought the gun new and that it came from the factory exactly as it appears now.  He shot IHMSA for many years but now has bad shoulders and can't hold the big guns anymore and sold it.  I guess this must have been some kind of option at one time or another if he is correct.  Thought I'd update everyone.
