Anti aircraft guns? Nah, they were used in IHMSA for shooting out to 200 yards. The increased muzzle velocity helped topple the 60 lb Rams. Most shooters used the Creedmoor position. You laid flat on your back, with your legs bent and your other hand propping up your head. The barrel rested on leather piece laid on the calf of your shooting hand side. Or you could hunt with it by propping up the barrel on a branch. I find anything over 10 " wavers too much support. JMHO.

Unless someone comes up with a realistic purpose, which I haven't seen yet, it's a "bragging rights" thing.

I have owned three of them and bragging rights is about the size of it. Mounted it is very heavy, I have sold them all and the largest barrel in my pistol packs is 12"! I wonder how many were really manufactured and sold originally?

I don't know but, I'd sure like to have one. They're selling (when they show up, which is rarely) for more than I paid for all three of my Dan's.
