An online auction site has a DW .22 for sale.  The seller states that it is a .22lr ( & mag cartridges will not fit in cylinder ).  The pictures and seller also points out the 8VH shroud is marked .22 win mag ctg. Additionally, closeup of SN = 15879.  QUESTION:  is it possible to tell if this was a .22 mag that had a lr cylinder installed, or was it a .22lr that someone put a mag shroud on?

From that serial number, I'm thinking it started life as a 22 long rifle that someone put a magnum shroud on.  Most mags have a serial number that starts 22M then either an S or B depending on finish.

It would be nice to find out how DW marked the early guns (22Win. Mag) guns. I have seen some over the years with Axxxxx numbers and picked up one that was marked as such, but have no way of telling if it was a factory made or after market from Monson. The search goes on!occasion

I think the A was used on 22lr and 22 Mag. But I think a lot of things  are not true. I do know the earth is round and orbits the sun though. The simplist explanation is usually correct. Whose law was that? That would mean Scorpio is right. I think factory 22 mag cylinders have an M one one end. IIRC, that is the only difference until the serial numbers changed to start with the caliber. That would be 22M.

Occam's razor...??

To quote Wikipedia...

"Occam's razor is a logical principle attributed to the medieval philosopher William of Occam (or Ockham). The principle states that one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed. This principle is often called the principle of parsimony. It underlies all scientific modelling and theory building." (Thank you Wikipedia!)

I thought parsimony was the feeling you get when eating more than one persimmon... or was that 'the trots'?

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Ron, freeze the persimmons. Then thaw and eat. Takes the pucker out of them. Maybe not the parsimony  though. Cheap way to sweeten them. big-grin

Ron #1 - I edited the post. I never talked like that in this life or any other.

Ron #2 - Thanks for the tip...an unripened persimmon will make you pucker like nothing else in this world.

This is especially humorous to those of us who actually have eaten persimmions. Which can be challenging in its self. Finding them ripe is the hard part. I have heard it said that a simmon attached to the tree is green, one on the ground is over ripe or rotten but if you catch it in mid air as it falls, Just right!. big-grin

May have to try the freezer trick.

Here's a thought, how about I move this one to Eat Drink and Be Merry, and let anyone and everyone throw in any random thoughts, observations, notions about  just about anything

Sort of a "Traveling Wilburys" thing to see how many random Hijacks we can string together.

This, of course is the third Hijack on this topic, and with my sincerest apologies to the OP.

Used to be that bakers might "reward" folks who bought a full dozen rolls by throwing in an extra.

BTW, now on the fourth trip off topic?

My DW 22 mag has an A prefix + a six digit number. It has a M stamped on the cyl. The trick on persimmons is to wait for a hard frost and don't eat the seeds.

Persimmons hang on the tree until the first frost in places that have frost. That's what putting them in the freezer mimics. It is a good way to store them u til you need them. Best to make persimmon pudding or baked goods.

A baker’s dozen probably comes from old England. There were severe penalties if you shorted your customer on the weight of bread sold. Since it is very hard to be exact when baking on weight the baker would throw in one or two extra to make absolutely sure there was enough there by wieght. Penalties included thrashing!
