Hello all! Here are some photos of my 715 pistol pack. I was very lucky to purchase this gun as they are quite rare here in France. I had been looking for one for a long time and I eventually fell upon this ad on a website. This one belonged to a guy who had just died and his widow was selling all his firearms (the laws here are quite restrictive and you cannot keep firearms unless you have the necessary authorizations i.e. you belong to a shooting club and are agreed as such). She was asking € 600,00 for this and I couldn't believe my eyes because I expected to pay much more than that. Well, here it is:
Any one of you experts can tell me the year it was made, according to the serial number: 357S002403 ? Also, what do the letters "CTG" stand for? (right after the marking "357 magnum") Thanks a lot. If you need more info or photos, please just ask.

Nice 715 pack. I am no expert but I believe it was born around 1995. CTG stands for cartridge. What does 600 euros convert to in US dollars?
LB
Just what Steve CT said, about $800. Thanks for the date, that's what I was thinking, roughly (the forum data gave 1994 for a smaller number).
CTG = cartridge. Should have thought of it, of course; Thanks for that, too.

You're probably right but you have to consider that the differences in legislation make for such low prices: few people allowed to buy guns, other people who cannot keep them and must sell them very quickly or turn them over to the police station for destruction (that's right: destruction; they don't even keep them somewhere...). besides, when you apply for an authorization and obtain it, you then have only three months to buy the gun of your choice. Otherwise, the authorization is not valid any more and you must apply for a new one. Actually, I sent my money to the seller and asked her to have the nearest gunsmith keep the gun in a safe until I received my new authorization (which took nearly two months). You guys don't know how lucky you are... Try and keep it like that.
Like I would have loved to invest in a really fancy handgun with engravings, inlays and such. If I was sure that my sons would inherit it, I would have done it. But knowing that when I die my one-of-a-kind gun would have to be sold very fast (thus at a low price) or be crushed, i would be a fool to do that.
That's how you ruin an industry (french gunsmithing was amongst the finest in the world for centuries past, it's dead today)...

Very Nice pac! How is it to get ammo?
What about international purchases and shipping?
In 1995 Mitchell arms contracted with Dan Wesson (Wesson Arms) they had a 357mag built calling it a Titan mk11 and mk111!
Just thinking here! and they destroy them what a shame!!!
We trying to keep our rights though as you know some would like to disarm the masses!

Guilhem - welcome to the forum. That's a nice looking pack you have there and you got a steal on it! Take a look here ==> look familiar? I picked up the EXACT same pack a couple years ago. The one I picked up is new and all the barrels were still wrapped in the original vapor paper. There's not many around in the black plastic cases like this. To give you an idea of their current market value - here's one that sold last week. WOW!!

Anyway, thanks for sharing your information about how things work in France. We are fortunate here and fighting to keep it that way. Enjoy your new pack!

Well, when you get an authorization to buy a gun, you are allowed to buy 1000 cartridges per year for that gun. As you can guess, this is far from what you need if you're a regular shooter. But reloading is allowed, no matter how many rounds you make. Talk about a stupid law... Well, anyway, I get by reloading my own ammo for all guns.
What about international purchases and shipping?
It's nearly impossible to buy a gun in a foreign country, except those that are regularly imported. But buying from one of your auctions, for instance, would be out of the question. Some accessories (grips, sights...) can be ordered abroad but they should not be an important part of the gun such as a barrel, cylinder and the like.

I know that. All my thoughts are with you on this; Keep to your rights, my friends!
Let me tell you a story to explain how things work here: some twenty years ago, a few groms were playing in the streets of one of the parisian suburbs, making a lot of noise and generally raising hell. An old guy who had been working all day and needed some sleep just got mad at them and he picked up a BB air gun he had and shot in the direction of the kids from his window (I think it was from a fourth or fifth floor, quite a distance for a BB gun...) By one incredible and sad fate, the BB pellet hit a kid in the shoulder, didn't touch any bone and went straight to his heart and the kid died. The old guy was put into prison and the government used this to pass a new law prohibiting .22 LR rifles with a magazine capacity of more than ten rounds... Now, you could have thought that they would have forbidden BB guns? No way: .22 LR rifles shooting more than ten rounds. What's the message here? You are only allowed ten rounds when shooting at kids? Stupid... Unfortunately, I could go on and on for hours about our guns laws... I wish I lived in the States for that.
Now, don't get me wrong: France does have some good points, too...

Great to see someone in France enjoys shooting Dans. I've got a pack and enjoy shooting a MAS 36. Great rifle. Built like a tank but a lot less recoil than contemporary military rifles. Bon chance avec votre Dan.
Dannyboy, I did shoot the MAS 36 and his more recent brother, the MAS 49-56 when I was serving in Verdun back in 1975. Both good guns. I love your US M1 carbine, too.

It seems we maybe the only country to allow a legal person to buy a firearm, or many with out restrictions. So far in the State I am we do not have a limit on capacity of mags! In that you have met the requirements for gun owner ship can you carry, open or concealed? WE have 49 states out of 50 that offer shall issue conceal carry permits.
Just another thought, check the side bars (LB Grips and EWK) you may find some must have that would be legal to import/ export.

Hello Dave. The picture is as follows:
Only a very tiny number of people are allowed to actually carry a weapon. Such authorizations will be given to VIPs if they can prove that their lives are currently being threatened for some reason or to people in charge of their protection but that's about all, except for policemen, of course.
Then you have authorizations to OWN a gun (but not to carry it on yourself in the street). These can be obtained by jewellers, for instance, or other shop owners where thieves are very likely to come to. Then you may have the gun in a drawer, again not on you. When you bring the gun back home (or from home to your shop), it has to be unloaded, equipped with a device that forbids to use it immediately and ammo must be carried separately, i.e. the gun in a case near you and the ammo in the trunk of the car or the opposite.
Or you are a sport shooter: then you must belong to a shooting club. During at least six months, you are taught security rules and basic shooting instructions. Usually, you will learn to shoot with an air gun then if the authorities of the club judge that you are "serious" enough, you will be allowed to use one of the club's guns (first .22 LR, then progressively other members will lend you their own bigger calibers guns to try.) After those six months (minimum), you will be issued by the club and by the shooting federation a green paper that says that you have been judged "serious" enough to be allowed to own your own gun(s). You then ask for an authorization from your local police station and the police will investigate about you (have you ever been treated for mental illness, alcohol problems, do your neighbours think you are dangerous...) If everything is OK, you will get your authorization and you will have 3 months to buy the gun you want. If you're buying new, no problem. If you're looking for a rare model, one that only shows every so often in ads, not so easy... The authorization is valid for 3 years only, then you have to have it renewed. You must ask for an authorization for every gun you own (maximum 12 handguns or rifles belonging to categories 1 and 4) 1 is military weapons or using an ammo that has been used by military forces anywhere in the world. So .45 and 9 mm are in the 1st category, for instance, whereas .44 Mag and .357 Mag are in the 4th... Go figure... Of course, fully automatic weapons are strictly forbidden to anyone except military forces and police.
And this is only the basis... It's actually more complicated than that and I don't want to bore you...

Guilhem, thanks for the detailed insight into your gun laws, what a pain in the butt! I know that the anti's who are constantly trying to chip away at our gun rights here, would love to have us end up with the same screwy laws that you have in France. I am thankful that we have the reasonable rights we currently have, and after reading what you have said, I'm more thankful than ever.
Also, it sounds like you really found one in a million with your DW Pac, considering the way your laws are there, way to go!

Guilhem,
Thank you for taking the time to share about Frances screwy laws! AS I have found with most gun owners they are the best people to be around! Well most of them anyway!
You should stop over here sometime and have some fun!
Any time you want to share info is fine by me and thanks again for the learning time!
If you need the best wrench out there for your Dan be sure and get the EWK one! I wonder if shrouds only could be shipped?
We (USA) need to leave our laws as is and enforce those on the books!

Dave, I'd love to do this for sure. Two years ago, I had the trip of my life in California. We (my daughter and I) rented a van in LA, drove down to San Diego to visit some friends, then up to San Francisco where we boarded our return flight to France. All in one week. We stopped to meet some surfboard shapers friends along the way and spent three days camping near Big Sur with the guys of the Swaylock's website (a place where amateur and pro shapers meet to talk surfboard building). Here's the link to that wonderful trip in case you're interested: (my pseudo is "balsa" on that site)

Sorry, no shooting or handguns talk in that one, but I hope it shows how much I love your country and how much I long towards another trip there. But I can barely leave the family behind for more than one week and this is so short for everything I would like to see... But I will make it... someday.

I don't know if this is the right place for posting shooting results? If it's not, please can you tell me where to post it? Well, I went to the range this morning and shot this at 25 meters with my DW and the 8' barrel. Commercial .357 ammo from Geco. I'm pretty sure that many of you would do much better but I liked it anyway (except for the 3 low impacts...) Will do better next time.
