Just some rambling thoughts on the subject. I suspect that the (or most) of the DW grips were produced by sub contractors who fabricated them in batches. There are dozens of variations of even the same styles over the years. Also wood is dynamic as it is affected by climate and temp. Also after building a grip or two ;0). I have discovered DWs have small variations in dimensions so that could play into it also. Again most of this is merely my assumptions and not scientific fact.
In summery some grips will fit tight and some will be loose.

LB,
Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge on grips. I love your work. I think this is purely aesthetics and the grip will function fine and not crack. However, I was wondering about opening up the back of this combat grip down to where it meets the meets the metal of the frame backstrap. That would give it a more finished look, assuming I don't screw it up. Not sure how that would change the feel of the grip.
On a separate note, I'd like to talk to you about grips for my Lil' Dan.

Trimming the grip to fit the rear of the frame "should" be fairly straight forward. It will move the hand forward and give slightly more trigger finger reach. Should help most people except the long finger ham handed guys. Give me a shout through the grip site or a PM when you are ready to discuss the Lil-Dan
