Went to a good size gun show today, 500 tables, lots of paramilitary stuff, autos and the usual stuff. I spotted a small glass case of older revolvers and thought I saw something familiar. Pics aren't too good, but its a High Standard Sentinal MKIII, 357 mag with a 4" porkchop barrel. The rear sights looked interesting to me. The gun has a little blueing wear on the muzzel from holster wear and the grips have a few minor nicks and scratches, but it is overall in good shape. The action is smooth and it locks up tight.
Now for the good part, the kid (under 30) at the counter seemed bored, when I asked to see the gun. It had a sticker of $250 on it, but I complained about the finish etc and told the kid I'd give him $125. He didn't even counter offer, he said GREAT! Said I was the first person in months to even pick it up and didn't know why his dad traded it over a year ago. He said he was tired of carting that heavy thing around to all the shows and he'd throw in this set of black grips to go with it for that price! BTW they are a nearly new set of Pachmyr gripper grips for DW small frames. I hurried thru the paperwork so the deal would be done in case the dad came back and had something to say about the kids' negotiating skills.
There is nothing with the gun, but thats ok. Looks like somebody maybe carred this gun. I don't know if the barrel has ever been off. I'd almost like to find a 2" BA and put the grippers on and carry it myself. I'm going to try to take it out to the range Tue. and try it out. I'm quite pleased with my find.
Seems most of the action was at tables with automatics and assult weapons.
There was one other DW there, a 15-2 VH pistol pack at another booth. It was in a brown case with electric blue velvet that I'm not sure didn't have a painting of Elvis on the other side. Only two BA's both 8VH one with a scope mount and rings and about a dozen speed loaders and a patch that didn't match the brown case. Wanted $1250, I passed on that one.
So did I do OK?

What DW parts will interchange with this gun? What model DW does this model most closely resemble? I haven't compared it against my 15-2 but the cylinder seems smaller and the gun thinner than the 15-2. I'd love to get a 2.5" BA and a set of concealment grips and put this in a holster. I'm looking foreward to shooting this old girl. BTW, about when did DWA build these for High Standard? Was it like 1973-74?

Scorpio, awesome deal! I am not a very good negotiator, I would have paid the $250 and still been happy! I like the HS .357s. On a good day that Gripper would bring $45-50 bucks on Ebay by itself.
Not sure, I think it is comparable to either the model 15 or 15-1. Charger Fan or Dave ks are a couple Pork experts, they will know more about when they were made etc.

I just finished cleaning the gun, barrel nut came off no problems and there was some oil on the barrel tube, so somebody has taken it apart and oiled it. It was a little dirty, but not bad. I removed the grips no problem either. I tried several of my DW grips and they fit perfectly. I compared the cyl to my 15-2 and it is the same size, looks smaller for some reason but its not. I compared barrel tubes and the one from my 15-2 is about 3/8" longer than the 4" on the HS. I scared myself a little during the cleaning. I had the barrel shroud off and the cyl. open and it slid off in my hand. Didn't loose any parts so cleaned and oiled everything and put it back together. I really like how easy it is to remove the crane and cylinder on this gun. I boresighted it at 20 yds in the basement and the sights were WAY low, about two feet. I felt like I was unscrewing that sight screw forever. Got it dead on now.
I'd like to paint the sight blade tip and outline the notch as they are blued or the paint is worn off. It would help with POA I think. Are the sight blades replaceable? and where would I find one? I set the B/C gap at .006" using the gage and tools from my 15-2. All in all, I like this gun.
BTW, my wife told me she really likes the "handle" on this one and how all the other "handles" swap around.
I'll post a range report this week I hope.

Dang, you really landed an smokin' deal with that one, congrats!
Lonwolf guessed closest, that one is the same as the 15-1 Porkchop. HS made those from 73-75. The flush nut Porkchop barrels are 1/4" shorter than the "-2" barrels.
Ironically, the exposed nut 'Chops are the same length as the "-2" guns. I'm pretty sure the reasoning for that was when DW caved in to the "ugly nut hate" & changed it to the better looking recessed nut, they decided to do it as inexpensively as possible. It would have cost more money to change the shroud tooling to keep the barrel length at 4", so instead they merely countersunk the shroud deep enough to make the nut fit flush (the nut is 1/4" tall) & lopped off that same amount from the barrel. There, problem fixed!
This gun's internals should be the same as your 15-2. The cylinder would probably swap between the two, but the timing would likely be off a little. Since the shroud holds the crane in place, then yes, once you remove the barrel, the crane will want to come along for the ride, too. They are even easier to disassemble than a 15-2, IMO.
Thanks for the story & the

Great steal on that one. I've learned one thing about gun shows. Carry a pack that you can put a small barrel cleaning kit in and solvent with a wire brush etc. A bore light and a DW barrel tool for most calibers like EWK interchangeable pilots. i have turned down guns because I couldn't see the barrel rifling because it was dirty or take off the barrel nut. It's a bad feeling to get home and find a problem with the pistol that will end up costing you a lot more to repair.
Question: How come at the guns shows most of the sellers don't clean the barrels out and wipe their used guns down with oil? I hate to sell anything that belongs to me without it being in great mechanically shape.

I must be confused. I thought that the pork ended with the 14/14-2. Someone correct me here, please. CF?

I think I'll start working on a thread detailed showing the evolution of the small frame DW from the beginning, going forward.
Although the 15-1 was never officially labeled in DW literature (at least none that I have seen yet) as a 15-1, there is a large enough group of changes between the 14 & 14-1, to warrant placing the 14-1 in it's own class (same with the 15 & 15-1). This 14-1/15-1 class was originally started by someone here at the DWF prior to me joining & after close examination, I agreed. So I have been running with that since.
For a quickie explanation, this first one is a 14. The 14 has a flush mount barrel nut, old style crane release, small ejector rod & a drift style (windage adjustable) rear sight.
The 14-1 also has the flush nut, but has been upgraded with a mushroomed ejector rod, newer style crane release, 14-2/15-2 style action & a rigid rear sight. And due to the reason I mentioned above, both the 14-1 & 15-1 models have their own unique barrel length, which is 1/4" shorter that either the 14 or 14-2.
The 14-2 is almost identical, with the exception of the updated shroud.
