Well, the gun dialed in perfectly. Just a few minor adjustments for windage and elevation, and then the cylinder started to bind. Whaaat? Couldn’t figure it out at the range, but dug into the problem as soon as I got home. After checking everything that I could think of I happened to notice some debris under the ejector ratchet. That’s all it was. The ratchet apparently needs to be the correct distance from the hand in order to properly engage. I’ve never experienced this before. Anyone else?

Mystery solved; rather odd one. When I first got this W12 (in unfired condition since 1970) I gave it a thorough cleaning and inspection. As I was cleaning the cylinder parts with the ejector removed I noticed some tiny metal shavings in the bottom of the upper crane leg hole. I thought I had cleaned them all out, but obviously I hadn’t. Shooting (and ejecting) a lot of magnums today must have loosened up the remaining machining chips which ended up trapped under the ejector star thus changing the clearance tolerance. I’ve now thoroughly cleaned the area removing the last of the remaining chips, so I anticipate no further issues with this revolver. It is an absolute pleasure to shoot.

No; when I purchased it last year I realized that it had never been shot, or at least only a few rounds (factory test?), a real time capsule. Thought briefly about not shooting it, but then couldn’t resist having the experience of shooting the very first DW design. It is a fantastic revolver, and I’ve been impressed with every aspect of it.

The models 11 and 12 gave Dan Wesson their reputation for accuracy. I am of the opinion they may be more accurate than the dash 2s. Supposedly the barrels were choked one thousands of an inch at the muzzle as Pythons were alleged to be. I cannot verify that though. Also the porkchop flange on the shroud that fitted a nipple on the frame may have contributed to the accuracy vs the roll pin used on the dash 2s. I also love the fact the cylinder slides off when the shroud is removed. It makes for easier cleaning, especially around the latch.
