Walt,
The early Model 15 Pork Chop Packs came in a brown brief case which is not the same as the brown one we see most often, it was just foam in the case no fabric, from Pork chop style 15 came the 15-2 with no interchangable sight this style Pack case was a black brief case with no fabric, the same style case as we see most often with the gold fabric. Time period of these changes is 1975-76.
Hope that helps.

Dan Fan has it nailed down, I'd say. Although, the earliest case was more of a green, than brown. I assume this is the case style you're talking about DF?
Those were only used on the model 12. Possibly the 11 too, although I have yet to see an 11 PP.
From there, they went to the black case. This started with the 12, sometime shortly before s/n #7400, then continued through the 15, 15-1, and early pinned sight 15-2's. I have seen one early interchangeable sight 15-2 PP in a black case, but don't know if it was original.
Anyway, yes, I'd say that the black cases more than likely were all done before the '77 model year, where they switched to brown. With one caveat, I have noticed just lately that a few (I think 3 so far) of the 715 PP's have been in a black case. Those all seem to have the later style Monson s/n's, if that's any significance.

Walt,
To bad he can't get you a picture of the case, maybe you could send him a picture of one of your brown cases and to see if his black case looks like yours. I have had 3 black cases over the past 6 years or so and some buyers try to tell you it's not a Dan Wesson case because it's black. One guy I sold a Pack to didn't look at the pics real well and called me after I shipped him the Pack complaining I didn't ship the original Dan Wesson case.
Not sure what to tell you about the price the 8 inch barrel is going to be a real tough find to make this a true 4 barrel Pack, you almost never see shrouds with the fixed front sight blade these were only produced for a very short time.
CF,
Thanks for posting the pics to show some fine examples of what we are talking about.
Time line would be 1975 for the black cases to start appearing until they switched to the brown with the gold fabric, patch and buckles. Those early Packs came with a block of wood so you could try to be like LB and carve your own custom grip.
Black case is featured in Jan. 1976 Guns & Ammo article "Four in one .357" a picture of this article is used in our random header photo of the forum.

Ask the seller if there is a spot in the foam for a missing barrel. If not, then it sounds like he's selling a 15 or 15-1 Pac. These have pinned front sights & adjustable rears.
Porkchops didn't have 8" barrels, so this would be what a complete Pac would look like. (Disrgard the plastic wrench, that's incorrect for this one).
Dan Fan, I wish I would have bought one of your early black ones. I'm still looking for the "right" one to add to my collection.
