I'm afraid a DW spending spree has just started again. I was actually shopping for a 715 when I saw the listing for this model 22. The guy described it as a great shape gun with an low serial number. The pictures looked good so we talked and I took a chance. I couldn't be much happier about how the gun looks. I couldn't find a speck of rust. It does have some "love marks" but overall it's in great shape. Based on the serial number registry I believe that this pistol was built in 1978. It'll be a perfect companion for my 44. I didn't realize it until this gun showed up but this is the third DW that I've had with a four thousand series serial number. Must be fate right .

If I had to guess I would say that the 4" barrel was the original with the 8" being purchased later. I really like how the 8" handles. I cannot believe how HUGE the target grips were. They are much larger than what I have on my model 44.
There were however a few issues that need addressing. The bore of the 8" barrel was rusty. Rust actually dumped out of the tube when I pulled a patch through it. After a good scrubbing it did polish up but there was still a decent amount of pitting. Wierdest thing, there isn't a speck of rust anywhere else on this gun. I tore it completely apart to verify!! I've already put myself on the list to be notified when EWK has them in stock again. Second, the rear sight was wobbly. I saw the thread on fire sights here so I installed a set and they work great. No pictures of that configuration yet.
Overall I'm happy. What's life without a project to work on.

I notice that DW target grips were oversize in the early years. I think people were larger then. Seriously, I think thinking was that oversize grips were better for target shooting. As calibers got larger I think holding on, getting your hand around the grip became more important IMHO.

IMO, regarding the many grip sizes available, I think DW was trying to make it so there was that "just right" grip for everyone. I have large hands & tend to favor larger grips. The smaller narrow ones in my collection usually never go the range unless I am taking a family member who I know has small hands.
Geddy, congrats on your latest acquisition, it looks like a beauty!
