There is a supposedly bright Stainless 715 on Gunbroker with 2 BA's. Seller claims they were custom polished. Snake-eye will post the link for me because I am still in training. I cannot make out the first 3 digits of the serial number on my phone. I think 715 start with a S, S/, or SD followed by 6 digits. Also I have never seen a stainless rear sight on a Dan. The cylinder stop on the sideplate is the old style not the reinforced one on 715s and blued guns from the same years. The overtravel screw appears to not be frame mounted. The grips and tool are pre stainless but that is not indicative of anything. I cannot be sure but the chambers appear to be recessed. How many of you have recessed chambers on your 715s? I think the gun is hard chromed. Any opinions would be welcome.

Actually, you don't really need the S/N. When I magnify the photos as large as possible, I can't read the S/N, but it is pretty clearly six characters. Anyone know of a six character 715 Serial Number?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Ha! I just did the same thing. If I were interested, I'd still ask him for the S/N. My 715 S/N is S/0032xx, which dates it 1980-81. So, 8 characters with 6 digits. I have a pretty high polish on mine, but not that "perfect".
Obviously, the 8" tube and barrel nut are not stainless. He says; "8-inch assembly contains a carbon steel barrel. I bought this from the original owner and he said it came with that barrel". Anyone think DW would ship a carbon steel tube with a SS shroud to go with a 715?
The rear sight on mine is blued. He says; "Rear sight is stainless steel". Did DW make a SS rear sight for the 715?
The top strap does not look to be bead blasted (even the side plate screw head looks plated to me. mine, and I looked at some spares, are just good old stainless and not shiny). He says; "a smooth, satin finish has been applied to the top strap and both barrel ribs"
Cylinders are recessed on mine. Ole Dog is right about the cylinder stop, it doesn't look like the integral one on mine. Most importantly he refers to it as a "set".
It's a nice looking pistol, but I don't think the barrels are a "set". He's asking a pretty respectable 715 price. If I bought it and it turned out to be a plated 15-2, I'd be PO'd.

Thank you all for your response. The ignorant response from the seller when I tried to give him a heads up(very respectfully) is what motivated me to ask you guys for conformation. I had bought a gorgeous 14-2 at a gun show in my early Dan Wesson days that was said to be stainless. It too had a blue barrel. Thought I had a prototype. Steve the squared me away. Mine is hard chrome with the satin finish of a 14. It is very similar to a 715 finish. Stunning gun but I will never find any BAs to match.

Old Dawg,
The funny thing is he assures " accurately described" ! He has no idea what he is selling.
Also, While nothing is for sure with Dan Wesson guns....It seems most 715s with serial numbers starting with 357Sxxxxx do not have recessed cylinders. Ones with Sxxxxx are recessed. Cost savings on later models.

The seller says he saw the gun before it was polished. Still, that sideplate without the reinforced cylinder stop is incriminating. I don't recall seeing the top of the hammer. Everything that could be definitive is not able to be seen. Including the serial number. Hmmm.

Serial Number 149355 (now part of the GB listing) seems like a late 1970's 15-2.
I also want to add that I own a 15-2 that I had refinished in nickel. I also have a 715 that I am playing with polishing, both by hand and on a polishing wheel. When I look at the pictures posted, I see clear, bright reflections that I only see on the nickel gun.
The cylinder stop really seems to be the defining feature on this gun.

Hence further cementing my opinion that this gun did in fact leave DW as a blued 15-2, then at some point had a decent nickel job done to it. I know I previously stated that I've seen stainless guns with SN's near this range, but my proof was eaten up by some hacker a few years ago. Plus, this one is too shiny to be a factory stainless gun.

So I sent him this:
Hi just wanted to let you know that the serial number is not consistent for a 715 but is for consistent for a late 70's 15-2. Looks like you have a nice looking plated 15-2 and not a stainless 715.
He responded with this:
Hi,
I saw the gun before it was polished. It had a satin stainless finish. This is definitely a stainless gun. I
received a similar message from another DW collector. I bought this from the original owner. He said that
it came with the blue barrel. Maybe this was a transition gun.
Thanks for your interest.

Tom
