I think you are right. Not hard chrome. 99 percent sure it is white metal. The bluing has been removed. Keep it well oiled inside and out. If you have air conditioning and or live in the Southwest it would maybe be very slow to rust. The serial number indicates 1977 or so origin. The cylinder stop, serial number, overtravel screw and absence of SS on the tang are sure proof it is not stainless. Considering the insistence of the seller that it is Stainless after repeat heads ups I would ask him to take it back. Or have it nickeled or chromed. Maybe have someone engrave it first. The rear sight is definitely white metal.

I'm coming into this thread a bit late.....it's white. It went up half a dozen times before for the last couple months before it sold off. One of the tell-tale signs is the "claimed" stainless sight. The manufacturer would have never cut the sight from stainless, and whoever took the finish off the gun should have at least left the sight blue. I would never leave the gun white - you'll always be wondering when it's going to start rusting unless you store it in a bucket of oil. I would ask for a refund with shipping reimbursed, but since it was misrepresented and the seller knew better it's tough to get blood from a stone. The next alternative would be to blue it but then you're going to be dumping more funds in to the purchase. Be wary of "unusual" Dan Wessons and especially non-cataloged items.

Harley, would it be correct to say that the transfer of this gun to a buyer as a Dan Wesson Model 715 would be fraudulent?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I e-mailed the seller. I told him that I wasn't sure whether the gun had not just been polished "in the white" and asked him, because he said that he had seen it before it got polished, if he knew where it had been polished. He did reply, said he did not know where. He said that he strongly doubted that the gun and shrouds were just carbon steel and asked why I thought so. I just got it this morning so I haven't answered him back yet. I'll work on a reply. It's too bad if it's true, because it's a drop dead gorgeous gun. There's not a spot of rust on it anywhere on the outside. I can't tell if it's waxed. but oil just beads up on it. Oh well.

hit the inside of the sideplate with cold blue and see what happens...shoot
exactly- and take a picture to send to the seller as the reason why you believe it to be carbon steel. Of course, if you can get a return of some monies, invest in some de-greaser, Oxphoblue and ATF fluid....... or send it to a hot blue professional.
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Ok. I tried cold blue on it. As expected the inside of the sideplate took blue, as did the (frame) end of the 8" shroud. The 6" shroud did not (and it has an "s" engraved in it. I sent the seller an e-mail (I may have to send the pictures one at a time though because they are too big. Ugh

I'm one of the guys that emailed him on GB about the inconsistencies of his claims about this being a stainless revolver. He held fast in his arguments. I think if you look back in thread you will see my post. I find it hard to believe with the assertions he made, that he could be mistaken. If you wanted to follow up on this, I would most consider having GB involved. Just my 2 cents worth.

if you find one...what's your plan?

Sorry for all of the needless troubles the seller put you through. You've done a great job documenting and illustrating the issues that members here previously tried to inform the seller about. It's pretty hard to argue with the cold blue results, or the naked grip tang.
I'm sure that many here (myself included) appreciated getting to hear the entire story.
Such a shame too. Whoever polished that carbon steel 15-2 Dan Wesson revolver did it quite nicely.
I hope that you receive due compensation from the seller.
I'd bet that there's a real stainless steel Dan Wesson 715 revolver in your future. Even more so, now that you're intimately familiar with the inner and outer workings of Dan Wesson revolvers.
Best of luck.
