Do you mean a laser type red dot that projects a dot on the target, or a holographic sight like this:
This is a Fastfire on an EWK clamp mount over the cylinder. Looks a little funky, but I have left the picatinny rail long to allow for a scope.
Mine is an earlier Fastfire, I also have a Bushnell TRS-25, which I think is a great sight for the money.
Finally, I'd check out Primary Arms, some of the best value in optical sights you will find

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

That one was a pretty limited production run, mine is actually the prototype that Eric and I worked on together. It was inspired by the Beuhler mount, long since out of production
The EWK is a base with two side clamps, the rail attaches to the base. I keep planning to get a shorter piece of the rail for use with the red dot, and maybe get a 2x scope and rings, which I will need the longer rail for.
Maybe if is there was a demand, Eric might do another run?

Here is a link to all kinds of DW scope mount info. Some are still available, some not. It may take some searching but mounts are still available depending on what you want.

I assume you have looked at EWK Arms' RH series of replacement shrouds with rails?
Otherwise, Weigand makes a rail for mounting scopes on Dan Wessons that requires drilling and tapping your shroud. Usually one can be found on Ebay. Most all the other options are not currently made but can pop up on Ebay or Gunbroker from time to time.

I admire you not wanting to D&T an otherwise original, unmolested shroud.
I repeat, if enough of you guys want the EWK mount, Eric will probably make more of them.

I've had my DW for 33 years and want to keep it in original condition, it is part of a pistol pack. I recently started timed shooting competition. Most guys have autos and everyone has red dot sights. My Dan is very accurate but still tough to compete with stock iron sights. If it wasn't timed my Dan would beat them all

I have used a red dot on my Ruger 22/45 Tactical for a while now. Really good for fast target acquisition and accuracy but kind of useless when you are moving around and trying to be quick due to having problems finding the red dot quickly with a pistol. I shoot some defensive competitions, IDPA like, and the guys with the red dots are slower.
Another problem with scopes and red dots is parallax due to the sight being much higher than the barrel. When I sight in the red dot for 10 yards the shot is low at 5 yards and high at 20 yards because the sight is 1-1/2” higher than the barrel and the bullet is still going up even at 20 yards. I fixed this by sighting parallel to the barrel which means that I sight in with the red dot 1-1/2” high at 10 yards and then I’m good for any range by putting the dot 1-1/2” higher than where I want the bullet to go. At longer ranges you have to add a little for bullet drop. This is not as much of a problem with iron sights since they sit much closer to the barrel. With the red dot and using this system I can shoot 2” groups of 10 at 20 yards with the Ruger 22.
