Saturday Morning was awesome! Buck were chasing and running doe all over the place!!!! I was getting aggressive and hunting what I call the "Inner Sanctum" of the property where I hunt. There were more scraps than I could take the time to count on the travel corridors to and from the sanctum. I could see a nice buck running doe on a far hill about 400 yards away and just hope they would run them close sometime this morning. At about 9:00 I see movement in the bush and shortly after I see horns. Rack looks nice and I watch as this buck destroys a bush about 40 yards out. I grunt at him a few times and he comes right to me. Moment of decision, I KNOW there is a 150+ buck in the area and have been watching him for 2 years, this is NOT him, but he is a big bodied buck and offering a perfect broadside/slightly quartering away shot. I draw, put the pin on him and think again- do I release or let down. I release and am happy with the result. Entrance was high and back considering how close he was but still got both lungs. He went 15-20 yards and crashed in the brush, I heard the gurgle of his last gasps. Side note- I took a lone doe from the outer part of this property on Friday morning and cut out her tarsal glands and used them as a drag and then hung them exactly where I shot this buck. I NEVER use store bought scent but am not opposed to some natural scent. So I get down tag and field dress this buck and as soon as I get him loaded onto my game cart I see a doe in an opening at about 30 yards. I smile and watch her...then as she runs off- there is the big grand daddy 150+ buck chasing her. It was a great morning. No regrets and happy hunting to all the rest of you.

Excellent, that is quite a trophy any day! And even better if there is a bigger one out there to keep you looking forward to next year. As they say a buck in the truck is worth two in the brush. What area of PA are you hunting, Bowhunter?
Where I hunt the deer herd has really dropped off, although large racks can be occasionally seen. At times I go several years without a buck, so I am quite happy to have taken a very modest 5 point on Nov. 1, came in to my call late in the evening near quitting time. I rarely hunt the first part of the season, I hit the last two weeks hard when hopefully the air is cool and the rut is on and the bucks only have one thing on their mind.

Lone wolf,
I hunt Hershey and Middletown. This buck was Middletown. I feel very fortunate to have permission to hunt the areas I do. Very Very Generous people. I do my best to offer Venison and Jerky and patrol and pick up litter, but I could Never really repay the kind folk who allow me to hunt their land. I feel blessed. Great looking 5 point. You Bow HUnt and gun hunt???

Yes, I hunt archery and rifle season. My family has a cabin in Horse Valley toward the western tip of Perry Co. Fewer deer there these days but my dad is 78 and still hunts both seasons so I will hunt there as long as he still does. I have never shot a deer with a handgun, so I may take the Supermag out to try for a doe if I get enough practice time with it between now and then.

I have every intention of Handgun hunting this year with my 741. I have been practicing and practicing and feel comfortable placing a good shot out to 50 yards with open sites. That of course is at the range when I am calm and not in a tree with an actual deer in front of me. I am sure the adrenaline will cause me to lessen my effective range a bit. I have several doe tags left (DMAP) and I have plenty of meat to process this week so I might get back out with the bow on Saturday. I really enjoy the gun hunting season, but if I can fill tags and the freezer with the bow I will.

Middletown has been my area as well for about 15-years, but the shooter level deer have noticeably dropped where I hunt as well. Too much pressure locally and I also believe Coyotes..
I have been hunting this particular Middletown spot for going on 10 years. This 8 point measured 113 4/8" took an 8 point that measured 138 4/8 back in 2013. Where I hunt in Middletown, I have helped to successfully prosecute two different poacher/trespasser A-holes. Seems like every other year I get a trail camera stolen and I only hunt with a climber stand that I take in and out every time I hunt as I am certain any other type of stand would get stolen. I have access to what I consider some VERY special property and I know the owner of the neighboring property and he is also a great bow hunter and all around good guy and we try our best to shoot older deer but both of the properties get trespassers and both are surrounded by serial poachers. I think it is the poaching pressure more than the coyotes that are taking the older bucks during night spot light hunting or hunting out of season - or what ever else poacher types do. I still love the property I hunt and do my best to patrol it and love bow hunting and gun hunting despite having to deal with the obstacles of the less ethical among us.
Do you only gun hunt Super Mag??
