Saved a 5B Doe tag for the PA firearms season and have been practicing.  Around 4:30 PM Saturday, I had a lone large doe come in behind me, she was up wind of me and had no idea I was hunting her. She got ever so slightly quartering away and at about 20 yards I shot her. I was using a hand load of 21 grains H-110 and a Swift A-Frame 210 grain bullet with a Fed #155 Primer. Looks like my shot placement was a little back and a little low as I completely took out the lower part of her liver and some of the far side lung. There was hair on the ground where I shot her and I followed her track about 20 yards until I picked up blood. It was a profuse blood trail deep red and at some places watery other places bright red and lung blood bubbly. About another 30 yards into the blood trail I jumped her and she ran. I backed out got some dinner and went back three hours later to find her about 30 yards from where I jumped her, blood trailing was easy. She didn't go 100 yards from where I shot her. The swift A-frame passed through and the liver was destroyed. The DAN WESSON 741 did its job. The bullet and the hand load did its job. The doe was recovered and will make fine table fare, but my shot placement should have been about 3-5 inches farther forward for a double lung/heart shot. I am happy with my first ever handgun hunt taking a PA doe.

And you were able to do it in flip-flops!  very nice.  Congratulations. Double check the 741 for blood- it will do a number on stainless.

All my local buddies are joking with me about the flip flops in the photo.  That photo is in my backyard, I changed out of my bloody clothes to take a nicer photo with the doe and took off my boots and put on the flip flops.  I should just tell everyone I hunt barefoot to better sneak up on the deer.  That 741 will get a good cleaning today.  Thanks for the tip on blood and stainless.

Stick with the barefoot story for posterity.  😉  I'd love to be able to do a hunt with my Dan.  Good job and thanks for sharing.

I was going to ask, what prevents you from Handgun hunting, then I saw you are from B.C.  I have bow hunted Black Bear in New Brunswick and the outfitter is a great guy who enjoys handloading for his big bore handguns and he explained to me all the Handgun Regulations of Canada.  Can you take a trip to the States some day with your DWs??

If you ever come to PA I could show you some sweet spots for Whitetail...you don't even need to bring your boots to hunt them here!!!!

PABowhunter,

Nice job with the Dan.  I have been getting skunked this year.  My wife has two deer to my 0.  I just sat out this afternoon with the flintlock till my hands and feet were blocks of ice and the only deer that passed in range was a spike buck.

Congratulations again on the handgun deer!
