I was about 10 or so the first time I read " old Yeller", and it just about broke my heart for good, it took me weeks to get over it. I got an "F" for my book report that six week period, I couldn't even talk about it to anyone. Then one day I was in the library going thru the stacks and the Librarian came over to talk, asked what book I had read last and offered to show me how the card index worked, she talked me through looking up "old yeller"  and left me standing there. Do you know that SOB that had killed " the best dog in the whole world" had written other books about dogs? He had even written a book about "ol yellers" son, I had forgotten he had sired some pups towards the end of the first book, but there he was "Savage Sam". I never got an "F" again.   P.S. That old Librarian was sure smiling funny when I checked that book out that day, adults are funny sometimes like that.

It would be impossible for me to pick a favorite book. I have many, many books in my Kindle library, and I subscribe to Kindle Unlimited on Amazon. I also always have a couple of books out from the public library.

Robert Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land" would certainly be near the top of the list for me, as would "Exodus" by Leon Uris.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Wisdom is merely the realization of how little one knows, therefore I am wise.

Steve, Heinleins "stranger" was an instant classic along with Asimovs "I Robot". There is no loss or attenuation of meaning, each time you read it you find some nuance to to appreciate.D

I am with you here!  IT is my go to when in need!  I read nightly for relaxation.

One that you may want to read to see where you don't want to be is Black Hand!

I love to read, mostly history, bio's and reference books. Favorite of course is the Bible.
