I've noticed that most younger folks (and even older folks) aren't inclined to enjoy a martini these days. As a youth, lots of "older folks" would order a martini at the bar while waiting for their table at various restaurants growing up. Over the past few years I've lamented that several taverns or bars didn't stock dry vermouth or had Gallo on the shelf that hadn't been in the fridge for years.
While the garnish depends on my mood (lemon twist or olive), my favorite ratio has remained constant for decades:
2.5oz Beefeater gin
.5oz Martini & Rossi dry vermouth
Add ingredients to mixing glass, fill to the top with ice, gently stir with barspoon. Do not shake!!!
Filter into your favorite coupe or martini glass and add garnish.
Do you prefer a wetter or dryer martini? Maybe a perfect martini? Or the obnoxious dirty martini? Share your preferences!!!!

I drink gin, Bourbon, Scotch, Cognac, Tequila, etc. Whiskey neat with a splash if it is cask strength. (120 to 140 proof.)
Martini's are like a woman's breasts. One is not enough and 3 is too many. Of course, about 3oz of Beefeater on the rocks with a lemon twist or two. Sans Vermouth. Dirty Martini's are disgusting.
I drink distilled spirits mainly when I can't drink wine of the caliber (sic) I am accustomed to. I have yearly allocations of Marcassin Pinot and Chardonnay, Colgin Cabernet, Schrader Cabernet, Boar's View Chard and Can, Turley Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Lerner Cabernets and Martinelli Jackass Hill zins and their Chardonnays. I only drink several times a month. I almost never drink alone, just when I socialize. Since Covid we have been socializing less and my celler is full. I could probably drink for the rest of my life without buying more but I plan on drinking more any day now. Just have to lose 15 lbs.

I was a restaurantor for a long time. My pals Fred Schrader and Ann Colgin started the cult wine craze. The got divorced and Ann got the winery. Fred started another. Their first winemaker is the greatest wine maker in the country. Helen Turley of Marcassin. She only makes wine now for her winery but in the day she put a lot of wineries on the map. I am a very lucky fellow. Billionaires would fly across the country for these wines. It is better to be lucky than good.

Unfortunately, you're dead on. One is great, so why not another right away? After that second martini, judgement goes to the wind with "hell, why not one more".
Whoever thought up the dirty martini must have already been drunk. Nothing worse than a brine-infested martini!

Not to be intimidated by previous comments, I prefer a "Filthy" Martini, using either Tangaray or Bombay Sapphire Gin
Both are respected and proper London dry gins and mix into a great cocktail, although I can only assume that "filthy" refers to something beyond merely "dirty". I only recently discovered fancy stuffed olives and particularly fond of bleu-cheese and garlic stuffed. Also enjoy pickled onion for a Gibson when eating grilled fish or organ meat.
BTW, every few years somebody will recommend a new gin and I've been let down almost every time. The new "popular" gin with younger people is Aviation and when the clerk saw be bringing a bottle to the register was shocked. She said that a famous actor that I've never heard of started his own gin company. An orange garnish was recommended on the bottle and upon taking one sip it went down the drain. My pet peeve with almost every new gin is that they hold back on the juniper resulting in a horrible tasting "gin".
Honorable mention goes to the regular Hendrick's gin. I'll get a bottle every couple years for a change and enjoy the recommended cucumber garnish. The newer Beefeater 24 is also something I enjoy about once every year or two, using a grapefruit garnish.
A number of years ago Winn-Dixie had a program called Fuel Perks. You got 2 to 5 cents perks with certain items. It usable at Sunoco gas stations for up to 20 Gallons of gas. If your tank held 12 Gallons and the perk was a nickel you got 60 cents of free gas. It was cumulative but you had to use them up in a month. Every month new items had perks. But the liquor store also had perks, up to a dollar a bottle. 20 gals times a dollar was 20$ of free gas if your tank held 20 Gallons. My truck held 30. One month Prairie vodka and gin had a dollar perk. The best gin and vodka I ever had. It is made in the Midwest. Minnesota I think. Normally it was 25$ but for every bottle I bought I got $20 of gas. I still have a huge stash of assorted liquor from that year the program ran.. Y Prairie vodka and gin though is almost gone. I do have a bunch of Hanger 1 vodka though. It is for mixing.

I don’t like martinis, I’m a whiskey guy. My fave is Pappy 15yr.
Same here, although I have yet to try Pappy. I will see if our store stocks some & give it a try. Currently Crown Royal is my fave.
Pappy 15 is hard to come by and when you can find it, it’s usually $2K-$3K per bottle. Fortunately, I was able to get mine for retail price of $167 from a local Binny’s Liquor store as a promotion for being an outstanding customer. I hope to get another this fall.

Good grief! I don't wanna say I'm cheap, but at that price, I ain't gonna shake hands with Pappy anytime in this lifetime.
