Comments in Zoommb's other wall thread about music and LPs got me thinking about getting one. As a child of the 70's and 80's I grew up with 8 tracks and cassettes. By the time I got out of high school had already switched to compact disc.
Our house was built in 1880 and have some family antiques, one piece being a Victrola that my daughter loves playing. So my question is what would be a decent vintage turntable, speakers, and receiver would you guys recommend?

Wow, Jody.
You have really opened a huge kettle of fish. There are literally thousands of products out there. At the top end of American manufacturers are McIntosh and Mark Levinson (read hugely expensive) plus many others.
For example My electronics are all Heathkit. Zenith bought Heathkit and flushed it; then flushed themselves.
My speaker systems are all Kustom Acoustics; a small manufacturer which has since gone out of business. Another instance of bad management like Zenith.
My turntable is a J. A. Michell Hydraulic Reference Turntable (made in England in the early '70's and featured in "A Clockwork Orange"). One of these is on permanent display at the Museum of Modern Art as an example of functional modern art. These are also no longer made. There have been many imitations and replications over the years, but I don't believe any of them are made any more either.
Your best bet would be to find a high-end audio store within a reasonable driving distance and go give a listen to current product. Then search the internet for reviews of the products you like to reveal any flaws.
Remember also, that vinyl records are not common anymore and could be very expensive.
Good luck in your search. It'll be a pleasant one.

Oh my, the last equipment like that I bought was a mix of JVC, Sony and Vector Research. That was mid to late 80's. My oldest graduated HS 99' and I gave it to her because I had started going to CD and by 05' I had converted vinyl, tape and disc to digital. I, not knowing how old the child is, have seen some things made to resemble the victorola and old tube radio that plays albums and cassettes, but don't ask me to remember where..lol I'm sure you could do a search online and find something. If you go to flea markets you might find some decent albums but certainly nothing recorded in the past 10-15 yrs. I wouldn't imagine.

Dang, this brings me back to the old cabinet record player I had in my room in my teens. That thing had some big speakers in it & would really thump! Drove my Mom nuts. I had to put a t-shirt under the lid to keep it from rattling at big volume. I miss that old (big) thing...

I don't listen to much from current artist but it's my understanding that vinyl is making a comeback... I'll do some research and see what I can come up with. I think this might make a nice edition to the home office!
Vinyl is definitely making a comeback, along with the smooth sounding tube amps and pre amps. Kids today have never heard true high fidelity. Never mind digital.. MP3s?? Seriously? Get off my lawn!!
Of course, it doesn't really matter to me any more. Too many years of loud music, airplanes, motorcycles, industrial noise has me deaf as a post. Oh, guns, too..

That is true Chuck, I remember some bands in the 70's and early 80's recording in Quadriphonic sound. Pink Floyd was my favorite then. I still love that music, but it's mostly country for me nowadays....
Man, There was sounds on that vinyl that will not come out on tape or CD. The good ole days... or as my baby boy [of 11 at the #7 spot] tells me, the way back whens....lol
