Okay guys, things seem to be a little slow around here lately so let's see if we can get things stirred up!  Let's list out Top 10 Handguns to own before you die.  This can be handguns you already have or hope to have.  I stole this idea from the American Rifleman.  This is going to be a difficult task but here goes!

1) Dan Wesson 745 Unflutted Cylinder (Already Have)

Image Enlarger

2) Ruger MKII 10" Bull Barrel  (Already Have)

Image Enlarger

3) Ruger Single Six – This was actually my first handgun, which my dad bought me back in 1989 – 90.  (Already Have)

Image Enlarger

4) Dan Wesson 445 SuperMag (Already Have)

Image Enlarger

5) Ruger's New Vaquero – My wife purchased this one for me and this is gun that spurred my interest in the 45 Colt cartridge. (Already Have)

Image Enlarger

6) Colt King Cobra – I remember seeing this on the front of a magazine when they came out and have always wanted one.  One day I'll get around to it hopefully.  I stole this picture from this post on The Firing Line.  Image Enlarger

7) Dan Wesson CBOB – I had this one below until a DirecTv installer releived me of it (without my permission!).

Image Enlarger

8) T/C Contender – I've always wanted one of these as well.  Just never pulled the trigger on the purchase.

Image Enlarger

9) Colt Woodsman Target – My father-in-law had a Colt Woodsman Sport I believe which got me interested in these.  I think the lines on the Target are nice and will have to pickup one of these one day.

Image Enlarger

10) Smith & Wesson 17-6 6" with Combat Grips – Already have a 16-4 and a 586 and would like to add this one to the list.

Image Enlarger

I know I would also like to a Freedom Arms to the list but haven't done enough research to know which model.  I'm also sure that once you guys start listing your list I might have modify mine.

Who's next?

OK, I'll play. Before putting down my list, I will say that I just don't care for revolvers over .357 (from personal experience) so none will be on my list. In no particular order:

1) Dan Wesson .357 in 4VH (uh, done multiple times)

2) S&W Model 66 .357 (still possible)

3) Colt Python Royal Blue 6" (my Aerosmith gun, Dream On)

4) Good Quality Gov't Model 1911 in Stainless (done)

5) Dan Wesson CBOB (waited just a couple days too long on one at $750 cry)

6) A top name Gov't Model 1911 (Les Baer comes to mind, not likely to happen)

7) Browning High Power (still possible)

8) S&W Model 41 .22lr 5.5" (see the Aerosmith reference above)

9) An AR Pistol

10) An original (WW II) Luger 9mm

Most of the currently unowned ones are in "unobtanium". I'd like to believe the the High Power and the S&W 66 could happen, and the CBOB could be within reach if all the stars align properly

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I thought hard about putting the 41 on my list but in the end went with the Colt.  Nice list!

Oh man!  I don't think I know enough to pick 10 handguns but here goes.

1.  Dan Wesson Model 22 w. 8" vent heavy barrel (the trigger on mine is so good I can't feel the break)

2.  Dan Wesson Model 12 w. 6" (real old school look to me; meat and potatoes if you will)  I need this one.

3.  Dan Wesson Supermag in any caliber with a slotted 8" barrel (this is beyond meat and potatoes; more like a great steak, Irish cobbler potatoes beaten till fluffy with a big dab of butter, fresh green beans and a cold really good beer followed with a homemade chocolate brownie.  Mmmm!  a real treat)  Mine is in 357

4.  Browning Hi-Power, I had a pre-WW II one once.  A wonderful classic felt good to hold and to shoot

5.  Ruger SR9.  a workhorse, easy to shoot, good sights and fires everything reliably.  I carry mine knowing it will go bang if I ever really need it.

6.  Dave's Mitchell Titan, possibly the best looking revolver I've ever seen.  Normally I can't imagine owning a gun and not firing it.  It would almost be sacriligeous to fire that one.

7.  going out on a limb on this one.  a S&W Shield.  I haven't held one but the reviews and pictures look great.  Seems like a small version of the SR9

8.  Either an old Colt Peacemaker (think Wyatt Earp) or a pair of ivory handled 45's like the Duke carried in The Shootist.  Something to be fired on special occasions and pulled out, handled, wiped down and put away often.

9.  a Dan Wesson Valor in black, just a really good looking 1911

10. pass on a 10th gun.  instead going with a good reloading rig to feed most of the above.

Excluded only because they are rifles, not handguns

  - a Ruger 10/22, just a great fun plinker

  - either a Winchester or Marlin lever in 30-30 (classic and should be able to put food on the table)

  - another lever in 22 Magnum or 17 HMR, something fun and cheap to shoot that will take out small varmints while putting a smile on your face

  - a good AR15, new age reliable home defense

  - a good 20 gauge Benelli, gotta have something to shoot birds with

Geez for a guy who doesn't know much about guns, I came up with a complete list.  laugh

Being somewhat of a newbie compared to the rest of you guys, here goes:

1.  DW 745 V6 or V8

2.  DW 740 V8S (got one)

3.  S&W Model 3 Schofield, single action with a quick reload (Got a pair of Uberti Calvary in 45 Colt)

4.  S&W 460XVR, handloader's dream (got one)

5.  Colt Python, supposedly the best shooting production 357 ever

6.  S&W 17, supposedly the best shooting production 22 ever

7.  Browning Hi-Power, supposedly the … you know the drill!

8.  DW 715 Pistol Pack (got a 715 with V6, V8 barrels, be nice to have a complete set)

9.  T/C Contender in a bunch of calibers

10. Dan Wesson CBOB 45 (best semi auto I ever had or ever will have… sold it to my best friend two weeks ago, had to at least keep it in the family)

Honorable *oddball* mention to the HK P7 PSP; squeeze cocker, gas retarded blowback, such a cool gun to own… if only for a short time.

…. man this was tough!!!!  I wanted to make two lists, one for DW's and one for other brands, but I thought that might be cheating cool

Ok here is my list in no particular order

1. Excellent quality 1911 in traditional .45 acp. (don't have one yet)

2. Browning Hi Power 9mm (don't have one)

3. H&R .22 revolver, homely but rugged and you can still buy good used ones for under $200 (I have a model 900)

4. S&W model 66, any vintage except the new ones with the lock hole. (I have a 66-2)

5. Dan Wesson 15-2 or 715, smooth action, rugged and reliable, and grip choices and barrel lengths to fit any shooter. Still has factory support. (I have a 'couple')

6. Springfield XDM, pick your favorite caliber, if the shit hits the fan this is the sidearm I want (I have one)

7. Dan Wesson model 40 blued with 8" slotted barrel, one of the most beautiful revolvers in my opinion and a pistol that says 'Supermag' on the barrel has to impress everyone at the range (don't have one yet)

8. Thompson Contender. A pistol that shoots rifle cartridges and has switchable barrels? Hell yeah (I don't have one)

9. Dan Wesson .44 magnum. I doubt you can find a nicer shooting .44, and good used ones are priced reasonably. Any barrel length you want. (I have one)

10. Colt Python, blued, a beautiful pistol with a smooth action like a Swiss watch. Unfortunately everybody I know who has one never shoots it. An alternate could be a Trooper MK3 which is a bit easier to find in a working man's budget. (I don't have either)

lonwolf, you and I were pretty much on the same page for 5 out of 10, maybe more.

I had a 744, just don't care for that big a gun

Your XD was my S&W M&P 9/9c (now it's an old school S&W Model 59)

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

My list in no particular order:

1. DW 7414-SRS-1

2. Wildey 475 Magnum

3. Freedom Arms 500WE Premier Grade

4. Freedom Arms 252 Silhouette - Need

5.  S&W model 41

6.  DW 1911 .38 Super

7.  AMT 50AE LNIB  - Need

8.  Colt Python 6" - Need

9.  Gary Reeder 500 Linebaugh

10. Thompson Contender

Although I used the word need, that is subject to interpretation..  Like most the Python is likely the most difficult to obtain.

I just remembered,

11. the phillips and Rogers 45-70 revolver (I've seen it, and it makes the BFR look like a pimp gun by comparison)

Gee, do you think that 10 guns is enough, maybe we should start a bug-out gun threadmini-gun

Lists like these are always tough for me. It's nearly as bad as when someone asks which is my favorite musclecar!surprised Like a guy could ever have one favorite musclecar, to me that's akin to the moon suddenly jettisoning itself onto a neighboring galaxie next week. lol2

#1) Anyway, thankfully I already own 6 guns I've really drooled over much of my adult life, the top one being my 7445 SuperMag. I've wanted this gun for probably 20 years.

(and yes, because I have my pic host site open, I'm hoarding thread space with picslol2)

Image Enlarger

#2) The model 40...the SM that started it all. Any DW aficionado should have one & I am sure glad I've found mine.

Image Enlarger

#3) For years, I looked at the .375 SuperMag as a little unnecessary mainly because it was between the 40 & 445 & I thought of it as more of a odd cousin in the SM lineup, but after it's first range trip, I was hooked. This gun is FUN & has moved up to one of my most favorite rounds to shoot!cool

Image Enlarger

#4) I have wanted a 15-2 Pistol Pac since I was a teenager. Buying this Pac opened my eyes to the DW world & consequently was the reason I joined thedwf-sign

(I need to get a better glamour shot one of these days embarassed)

Image Enlarger

#5) Okay, the non-DW's I've lusted after. One day a friend gave me one of these to take to the range, he claimed it would give me a big grin with each trigger pull.laugh He was right! A long barrel Ruger Super Blackhawk is a guaranteed smile maker, no question. I landed this 1978 tapered barrel gun NIB locally a few years ago & I must admit, it still makes me grin like a kid every time I pull the trigger...it's simply FUN to shoot!

(naturally, I had to build it a case embarassed and yes, I love those fat smooth Herrett's)

Image Enlarger

#6) The Seville. This wasn't even on my radar until I came to thedwf-sign & saw IHMSA talking about a couple of the ones he owns. Further info was needed & thanks to this confangled WWW thingie, some good info came back fairly quickly. That's it, suddenly I "needed" one.lol2 For once, five planets were seemingly aligned in my favor & I had a shot at owning my first Seville.

I paid more than the other guys were willing to pay, but after I got it home & started doing some digging, I found that it is one of only 5 ever made. Suddenly I didn't feel so bad about outbidding the other guys.wink It's a 10" .454 Magnum (later known as the .454 Casull) IHMSA edition. I later made wood grips for this gun, the original Pachmayr's are beat up now & don't do this one any justice.

Image Enlarger

Image Enlarger

The Seville (United Sporting Arms) is where a lot of Freedom Arms' ideas came from & they were able to carry the torch onward with great success. The Seville is also one of the first stainless revolvers on the market.

Of course owning one always leads to another, so there was no way I was letting a .375 U.S.A. (United Sporting Arms...a.k.a. the .375 SuperMag) get away, especially as much as I LOVE this round! And yes, I also have an affinity for long barrel revolvers, in case you wondered.

Image Enlarger

For the rest of the 10 I'd love to own before I die, I would have to say the first is...

Dan Wesson 414 SuperMag is #1 hands down.worship Gotta complete the set, dwas calls.

Wildey 475 Magnum...I just know that one's a "smile maker".wink

Freedom Arms...I can think of at least 5 calibers, starting with the .454 Casull. Premiere Grade of course, because I like mine shiny. Yeah, baby!cool

KAC SR25 7.62 NATO rifle with scope, flash suppressor & folding/popup sights. I'd sure love to play with one some day!cool

Here's 4 I think you guys missed:

1. Freedom Arms .500WE -- absolutely top-drawer.

2. Desert Eagle .44 magnum -- a basic requirement, wonderful gun.

3. Wildey .475 Wildey magnum -- a must-have great shooter.

4. Serial number-matched pair Lee Jurras Custom 100 - .44 Automag and .357 Automag. - the king of .44 and .357 magnums.

Good luck finding the last one, I'm not selling mine.  They are NIB, but at some point I'm going to put 1 clip of ammo through each just so I can say I did.
