I had never heard of the 1986 Miami Shootout until tonight I was reading in the American Rifleman about the history of FBI handguns.

Did you realize that one of the two bad guys was carrying a Dan Wesson .357 Mag. He was shot 12 times before he died and his partner was shot 6 times.
8 FBI agents were in the shootout. The gist of the article in AR was that the FBI agents were out gunned so the FBI started looking for more firepower for their agents. I found the article very interesting as well as the info in the link above about the shootout.

That's quite a story! I wonder if their military training had much to do with the bad guys being able to take so many hits & keep going? My first thought is that they were on some sort of drug, but the article says they were clean. I guess that only leaves adrenaline.
It's too bad that it often takes a situation like this to initiate changes in the weapons police & FBI are issued.

I live in a very small town in Alabama. We have 5 cops on the force. They have some pretty powerful firepower in the trunk of their cop cars. They buy their own rifles and shotguns. They have cleaned up a lot of drug problems since the new administration took over. The original force had only one cop up until about 4 years ago. We called him Barney. He was old, weighed about 135 pounds and didn't do much. Back in the day he did stop a bank robbery, shot and killed the robber who was holding the bank president captive.
Too often the administration limits law enforcement with rules that put the LEO at a disadvantage and don't pay them much. I know I would not put myself at risk for $10.50 per hour.

If I remember correctly, it was poor ammo performance combined with hits in non-vital areas
Edit: Also, pistols generally suck at killing people. Even with modern high performance defense ammo, you have a very good chance of surviving even multiple gunshot wounds. If there is one thing we have learned fromt he last 10 years at war, it's proper care of those sort of injuries. That care increases your chances of survival even more. Those lessons have trickled down to EMS, police, firefighters, and even out into the civilian world.
I have personally met several people still walking the earth each with multiple scars from where they had been shot with a burst from a .50cal machine gun. Small arms in general aren't that great at immediately stopping someone (barring a central nervous system hit)
I read a fantastic article about a female sherriffs deputy that was shot in her own front yard by some bad guys. She was shot directly through the heart. She was able to return fire, killing one and wounding the other, and was able to dial 911 and direct EMS to her location. EMS found her on her lawn. She returned to full duty about 8 months later.
Remember....Getting wounded doesn't mean you are out of the fight. It just confirms you are in one.

That's amazing. That story & Gabby Gifford's story (and they aren't alone, I'm quite sure) are truly amazing things to hear. Yet, some folks can slip in the bathtub & it's lights out.
Hossman, I agree. Our police officers are not paid enough for the job they do, at least most of them. And then there's some that should have never been officers in the first place... LINK
