They both perform the same function. However, the plastic ones are susceptible to cracking into pieces as they age. Look close at a plastic one and you will likely see the cracks forming. I guess it's possible for the metal part to turn inside the plastic, but it's more likely that the plastic will just fall apart if it gets to that stage. Plastic tools are really just for collecting and originality now.

Yeah I hate the original tool especially if you actually shoot and use your DW regularly not let it collect dust in a safe.
Waaay better off getting a EWK wrench.

Yes, the inside of the plastic tool breaks free and will not turn the nut. Quite often. One more reason to not over tighten the nut. I like the later all steel version. Has all 3 Allen wrenches. Don't overtighten the sideplate screws or grip screw either. I like the idea of using the broken tool welded to a socket. I have seen sockets cut to make a wrench too.
