Is the barrel wrench with the red plastic covering the same (solid piece) as the ones with out the covering. Is it possible for the barrel portion to "spin" freely inside the plastic portion?

They both perform the same function. However, the plastic ones are susceptible to cracking into pieces as they age. Look close at a plastic one and you will likely see the cracks forming. I guess it's possible for the metal part to turn inside the plastic, but it's more likely that the plastic will just fall apart if it gets to that stage. Plastic tools are really just for collecting and originality now.

Yeah I hate the original tool especially if you actually shoot and use your DW regularly not let it collect dust in a safe.

Waaay better off getting a EWK wrench.

Thirty years ago I took a broken wrench apart and welded the spanner ring to a regular socket. Now I can use a 3/8 ratchet to remove barrels.

So then the red ones are actually 3 seperate pieces then, for each  tool function?

Yes, the inside of the plastic tool breaks free and will not turn the nut. Quite often. One more reason to not over tighten the nut. I like the later all steel version. Has all 3 Allen wrenches. Don't overtighten the sideplate screws or grip screw either. I like the idea of using the broken tool welded to a socket. I have seen sockets cut to make a wrench too.

yes,

The same role
they both do.
The plastic ones, however, are vulnerable
to breaking into pieces as they age.
Look closely at plastic one and
you can possibly see the creation of cracks.
It is possible for the metal part to turn inside the plastic, suppose, but it
is more likely that if it gets to that point, the plastic will just break apart.
Plastic instruments are now mostly
just for collecting and originality.
