Good Morning,
I received an email from Randy Gates over the weekend concerning the 505 SuperMag and wanted to share it with you:
Randy Gates said:
Just to let you know, Dad was working on the 505 or 50 before he died in 1988. The notes on his desk were between the 414 or the 505. In the early 1980's we took the supermag cartridge's to Smith and Wesson. They did not want anything to do with supermags or the 50 in a handgun. The Gun Mag writer had it right, It's just a copy of Elgins case.
This just highlights how far ahead Elgin's designs were of the market! I'm certainly glad that S&W passed on the SuperMags back in the 80's.
I would like to thank Randy for sharing this information.

I'm sure S&W didn't think the Supermag idea would have gotten nearly as popular as it has. It makes me wonder if they're kicking themselves, looking back on it all.
I'm glad it was DW that decided to go with the idea, S&W Supermags just wouldn't have been the same...as evident with the X frame guns today.
