There were lot's of brown cases.
The one thing to be sure of with DW History is that "I thought I had it all figured out, and then ..."
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I believe that for most of the '80's, the brown case was the standard. Both my 715 and my 744 came in brown cases. The brown seems to be the most prevalent case. I have bought many since for all of the other Monson guns I own, all are brown.
However, like LB says, with DW, just when you think you have it all figured out another anomaly turns the tables.

Coincidentally, that's the same lesson I learned with old Mopars. But you're right, the same seems to hold true with DW's. I was completely convinced that the black cases were used up to a certain date, then they were superceded by the brown ones.
In the past couple months however, I've learned that this is only partially true. Black cases (with the linkage/prop rod on the left) were definitely used in the early 70's. However, I have recently seen two matching number 715-2 PP's with black cases (linkage on the right)...so now I'm wondering if there was a year or so, where they made black cases specifically for the stainless Pac's?
Obviously black & stainless go well together, right? I think that may have been the rationale behind the idea. Unfortunately, my brain didn't go "DING" until both the sellers had killed most of their auction pics, so I don't have any good pics right now to back up my theory, only this lame one...
Now I wish I had noted the serial numbers & snagged better pics. Oh well, there's always tomorrow.

Here we go, the other one I saw before is back on GB LINK
The gun being sold isn't original to the case, but luckily, the case is still wearing it's original tag/sticker. And someone added white fabric inside, which I'm pretty sure (so far) was never offered by DW.
Like I said above, the main difference between this case & the earlier cases is the placement of the lid linkage. The early ones had the linkage on the left.
The very early ones (mostly Porkchops, but some "-2" guns) had a metal cover on the handle bracket, whereas the later early ones (only "-2" from what I've seen) used a black plastic cover.
