I hope to read the full article in American Rifleman to gain insight as to why a Professional Guide in that region would believe it appropriate to carry a 9mm for defense against bears. While one might argue the 7 shots were apparently adequate, others would be justifiable to make case that 7 shots are too many to bring down a charging bear.

The 9mm has taken a lot of beating the last years as being inadequate but its a very potent bullet, as proven for 100 years now, with good penetration as FMJ, certainly its not a hunting cartridge but well placed shots is always the key. And also dont mess with the bear and generally the bear wont mess with you and seven shots do seem a lot, maybe the anxiety of the moment but generally even the bang of one shot can scare an animal away. But they were asking for it:
