I "spectated" today at the Coast Guard Academy 3 Gun Competition, a very well thought out and executed event hosted by the USCGA Cadet Combat Arms Team. Many (most?) Coasties are not shooters, these men and women are.

My wife went along this year,  and since she tolerates shooting, but is not a shooter, she was asking lot's of questions and learning a lot.

Here's the inspiring part:

I had seen a mid-late 20's guy rolling around on a wheelchair, and had him pegged as another spectator. Suddenly he's pulling a wagon loaded down with ammo, shotgun, AR,  etc. The CWO from the Academy who organizes the event saw my interest and told me that "we have a double amputee competing this year, it's pretty exciting to see him out here".

This double amputee (both legs from below the knee) got out of his powered chair, and fired every stage, including prone, transitioning from station to station, managed all his weapons, ammunition, even assisted down range resetting targets, etc.

Maybe you've guessed by now, an American Soldier, wounded in Iraq three years ago. Completed rehab a year ago, and now shooting 3 Gun well enough to probably place in the top 25% under exactly the same conditions as every other shooter.

One More American Hero

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Some people persevere regardless of whatever gets in the way.

That is very good to hear. I feel for those guys. When I go to the VA hospital there are always numerous people in wheel chairs there. It bothers me to see that. It is good to see that this guy is able to enjoy life.

Wisdom is merely the realization of how little one knows, therefore I am wise.

S!  (salute)

Those stories are too far and few, so its really really heartwarming when they surface.

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

Great story! There is no force on earth as great as the determination of the human spirit. What a great inspiration he and other like him are to those of us  who are blessed with good health.
