The gun as a whole was built to meet the rules of competition for that sport. Within that it allows for certain barrel lengths and then overall weight. the slab side is an attempt to build a gun that is both within the rules and give an advantage to the shooter that would not exist with a stock gun.
Things a slab-side may do:
reduce muzzle flip (from hot loads)
aid in steadying the hand (any load)
Muzzle flip from a light round at low velocities is neglible, DW provides a platform for having hte right BA for the right situation.
