I was going to start another topic, but seeing how we have pics and everything in this one, I'll just ramble on...Let's call this installment: CDF Gripwerks...
So, CDF and I were hanging on Saturday and couldn't decide if we should:
- go rent some studio time and cut a hit single (this is Austin y'know?)
- Catch a quick flight to 'Vegas and win a couple million or
- Fool around with some grips for a Dan Wesson.
Well, it's probably not hard to guess where our priorities lie...
Here's the update:
Size adjustment.
Left and right aligned with drills during fine sizing for congruency (er sumthin')
CDF's got "the touch"...
Tailpiece pin indent. A little bit at a time...
How that identical contour is obtained...
CDF makin' 'em just right!
Zebra "loaners" on my CBOB. Hmmm, not bad...wonder how the other side looks...
Hmmm...that one's not bad either...
CDF's got the woodworking talent and knowledge (& patience). We'll be seeing some nice grips coming out of the "gripwerks"...
...sure glad we didn't waste our time in Vegas...

Great report Dusty!
I didn't realize that you took half those pics. I guess I was busy or somethin.
Charger- double sided tape is the key. The trick is never to go past the center point on the side that's aligned with the edge of the block- if you do (and I did) you will sand an uneven area that destroys your contour. Then you get to start at square one again.
Maybe next time, Dusty and I will record a single, go to Vegas and win a million, and then I will buy a CNC to do all of this for me.

Great info guys… I think CDF has about mastered the 1911 grips… might be time for him to do step by step instructions for the rest of us!
Awesome looking CBOB grips! When you start taking orders let me know I would like to have a set for mine!
I think I am just about ready for production.
I will probably make up a few sets each of different woods. I had an idea about a grip logo, to be shown/announced at a later date. I asked the wife if she thought she could do it, and she said she will give it a shot. This was immediately followed by a conversation about trademark infringement- I told her this logo won't fall into that category. If she can do it- I think you guys will like it.
I will post up a "how to" for you guys after I get home from work today. Other than the drill press requirements and finishing techniques, Dusty pretty much covered 70-80% of the process with the pics.

OK guys, here's a link for a play by play. Originally, I found these instructions a little hard to follow but eventually figured it out. If there are any specific questions, post em and I will try to answer them.

This is what I used to start the process, and then I fine tuned a few operations in order to make it easier (for me).
Good Luck everyone!
