I want to ship my DW to the factory in NY for repair. I had a telephone conversation with a person in the DW service department who said I can ship my DW to them via FedEx overnight. He said they can ship it back to my residence as long as someone over age 21 is present and signs for it. He said this was permissible because the gun wasn't going to change ownership.
I figure this is the factory talking so they must deal with this type of thing all the time but I'd sure like to hear from some others before I head off to Fedex.

I have heard just what you said many times from several people. There is a very good thread on shipping somewhere on this forum. Maybe someone will come along with that link. FedEx does need to be informed you are shipping a handgun and then they will charge you their premium. I've heard nothing but good things about the work DW does and their charges always seem quite reasonable. Good luck!

That is correct, as I just sent my Python back to Colt a couple of months ago. As mentioned above you have to declare the package to be a firearm and it must be shipped overnight only. It's not cheap…in my case with the Colt the overnight shipping fee was ten dollars less than the total of the repair cost and return shipping. Also you'll need to contact FedEx for their closest 'hub' location to ship the gun. It must be taken there, not to one of the smaller places that handles FedEx shipments.
The factory will ship the gun back two or three day service which is cheaper. Someone must be there to sign for it. If notified before delivery by FedEx you can request the gun to be held at the hub for pickup instead of home delivery. With the Colt I received no early notice….it just showed up. DW may do things differently than Colt as all of their correspondence to me was via normal mail. No emails….only phone contact was to get a shipping address and to arrange payment after receiving the quote for repair in the mail. Hope this is of some help and good luck with the repair work.

USPS!
The cheapest way to ship a handgun is through the Postal Service from an FFL, even if you have to pay a small fee. A licensed person can ship flat rate, insured for extra of course, provided they have a completed USPS Form 1508 on file with the local PO. I do it all the time...

Please explain further what "pick up" refers to.

I'm sorry, that would be a UPS or FedEx pickup. And as I recall what he sends is instructions for packing, and a shipping label (FedEx, if I recall), then you drop the package off at FedEx/Kinko's.
That way you don't have to pay whatever your FFL wants to charge to ship it. Mine charges $50.
I hope this is a better description. If you need more, PM me.

Can't you ship from a UPS hub overnight via air mail, If you ship to an FFL or the Factory? Yes, I know it's expensive. Just checking on options.
Yes, but it's very expensive. Most FFL's (and Mfgr's.) have an agreed upon lower rate and if the factory charges it back to you it should be about $30, not $70.

Just got my DW back from the factory. Hopefully my issue has been resolved (light primer hits/fail to fire).
The description of repair says, "installed .006 headspace shim, hand, spring kit, bolt and set over travel screw."
Anyone know what "set over travel screw" refers to? Or what a headspace shim is? I don't see those parts in my small frame owner's manual.

Overtravel screw is located in the back of your trigger or in the frame just behind your trigger depending on the age of your revolver. It keeps the trigger from being pulled farther past where the hammer breaks when you shoot.
Headspace shim will be in front of the cylinder on the crane, a little washer type deal. It means the cylinder had too much front to rear end play with the action closed. At on .006" you probably cant see it unless you pull the cylinder off the crane.
hopefully you understand, I am not always good at explaining things and am on my phone otherwise I would put some pics here to show.

Thanks for the info. Now that I see what they did at the factory, no amount of tinkering on my part would have solved my FTF problem. I wouldn’t know a good hand or a good bolt from ones that needed replacing. As for adding a headspace shim, and setting the over travel screw - I woudn't have known about those, either.
I sent it to the factory because I’ve had it with gunsmiths who take my money and then give me back my gun without fixing the problem. Before I sent it to the factory for the FTF issue, a gunsmith kept it for three weeks, charged me $90 and when I took the gun to the range, the very first round failed to fire.
When I first got my DW a few years ago, it would jam at the range - but I didn’t have a clue about barrel clearance. I took it to a local gunsmith who apparently knew less than me. He kept it for three days, charged me $35 and I got the gun back oozing gun oil but it still jammed. Only after finding this forum did I learn about barrel clearance and how to adjust it. After adjusting barrel clearance, everything was OK.
