SHOOT I have one of the Savages and like it although I haven't got to put as many rounds through it as I would like.
I would like to get a decent 36x scope for mind. What brand does your brother have on his? I'm also thinking about getting a Boyds stock or one from Sharp Shooter Supply.

Bro has a TruGlo 36x -- nice scope for the money. I have two Truglos; one on my kids .243 (3-9x) and I have a 6-24x I haven't mounted yet (maybe 17 HMR scope)

SHoot- you'll love the Tru-Glo 6-24. That's what I have mounted on my Encore Bob.
I have a Savage 17 HMR and it's deadly on crows. I also have the 17 Rem Fire Ball- that kills squacks dead... just have to watch the fingers when I reload.
I say go for it!
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

I have a Marlin 17 VS. I'm not sure I could deal with a 36 power scope but I have put 5 17gr. Hornady's into a dime at a 100 meters lots of times. I have a Nikon 30mm 2.5-7 power on it for squirreling. Ya I spent more for the glass than the gun, but shootin golf balls at over a hundred yards is fun!

Shoot, My son has one of the savage 17HMR's and we have cleaned many ground hogs and foxes with it so far. Today we changed the scope to an illuminated reticle scope and back to dime sized holes at 50-yards and quarter sized holes at 100-yards with no scope adjustment and same point of impact! That impresses me. We liked the Hornady 17 grains the best of the several we tried. For whatever reason it does not favor the 20 grain Winchesters nearly as much as the other available brands.

supposedly the pre-accutrigger models like the 17 gr and the newer model like the 20 gr.

Well, I broke down and bought the beater -- $150 out the door... Crappy powerline scope, good weaver rings, and a rusty gun ...
Jody--my brother has one of those stocks on order also. Mine is a pre accu-trigger model with a wood stock, so I'll probably leave the stock on it.
I'll slap a better scope on it, give it a trigger job, and see how she shoots before I do any real work on it.

SHOOT,
I'm sure you have seen this but thought I would post it just in case. Here is a link to some modifications that can be done to make the pre-accutrigger better.

I love fixing up beaters... This is a .3" group I shot out of that rusty old Savage 93R17 at 50 yards. First box of ammo I ran through it. All the other grooups were the same, except they all had a flyer. I've heard flyers are a common problem with the 17--I'll have to try some different ammo. I gave this gun a trigger job, steel wooled the rust off the barrel, and ran a brush down the barrel. Torqued the factory wood stock evenly... and she shoots !!! By the way--crappy old Tasco mag IV 4-16 scope on it...
