My eyes are bleeding from reading all the comments about Barney'd Dans but I haven't found if anyone had lasting success with changing that illustrious purple back to standard bluing?
There were several rather vague references to success but no real recommendations for the job...but an interesting post mentioned someone on site who had success with such bluing. Is there still someone around here who does bluing?
The threads were mostly 5-10 years old it seemed. With technology being what it is today I wonder if there have been advances in bluing or if it is still basically the same.

There are a couple theories regarding the cause of the purple color from contaminated bluing tanks to something in the casting process (silica?). I would tend to believe it is something with the alloy that causes the purple color since it is usually just the frame that is affected and not the shroud or side plate, and the frame is cast whereas the shroud is machined from bar. Perhaps the cast frame requires different bluing conditions/controls than the shroud or sideplate? With that said, I bet that someone that is good with bluing can get a blue/black color on a frame that was previously purple. How long it may last can only be told by the test of time. I have not seen any information that indicates attempts to professionally reblue a purple gun were unsuccessful.

That pretty old reference was probably about "Blue Ridge". If I recall correctly, at one time he did bluing for Dan Wesson. He did some aftermarket business for a while, then...?
I have commented in the past, if I ever needed bluing, nickel, or any other special finish, it would be with Fords, based on many online comments and reviews.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I had an exchange of emails today with Ford's Custom Gun Refinishing regarding the re-bluing of Barneys.
If they re-blue they will warrant one year if your revolver plums again. They also advised that because of the metal composition a re-bluing is not likely to be permanent.
So the word of a nationally respected refinishing company mirrors the thoughts expressed by some of our DWF members.
When asked if the Barney factor would affect chrome or nickel plating Ford's said it should not...so maybe that's the way to go.
