"Tannerite- ammonium nitrate/ aluminum powder based binary explosive
used primarily as a target for firearms practice".
Cabela's sells this under the name Sureshot, got 4lbs of it from a seller
this weekend but it's been too wet to try it out.
Anyone play with this stuff ?

yup, cool stuff... Don't attach it to anything you want to keep, like target stands .
Somewhere I have the chemical formula/ ingredients. It is legal to own as long as it is kept in separate containers until you reach the range. All mixing must be done on range before firing.

I tried a couple cans (plastic containers) of that stuff last fall...it wouldn't light/spark/flash/go-boom at all. It only splooged itself all over the hillside, after a couple decent hits. Total bummer.
Maybe you'll have better luck. <--the "good luck" smiley...woops, should have probably had a winker in there too, for good measure...winker-->)

Some of it needs rifle hits to set it off--you just need to check what you are getting and use the right caliber

Maybe that was my problem. I don't recall what the label said, so I'll have to pay closer attention next time I'm at the store.

They make some for slower speed ammo.
If I can find a place to shoot it, I'll buy some.

Bring it out here I am sure we could pop a few rounds into out here in the county! Never tried the stuff but does look interesting!

I checked the Tannerite web site. Everything I saw mentioned use a high speed rifle round excluding rimfires. Nowhere did they say how fast. I emailed them and got the response that they doubt that anything they have would work with my 357 Supermag. They never did say how much speed is necessary. Nor did they answer if there was a recommended bullet type.
But "We do have a pistol target round that is LOUD but they are fairly small. The upshot is that they are only 26.00 per case of 12. The downfall is that they are hard to hit. They are primarily designed for precision long range 22 rim-fires, but they work for handguns as well."
Okay, one of my co-workers has some ground about 80 miles south of here. He'll let me shoot there. Plus DWA just volunteered he's got some ground. Wichita is a little farther but very doable. Road trip! So I've got a couple of places to shoot it.
I found some old posts on thehighroad.org, http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-201269.html, where some were saying the faster the better. They got a little more specific saying the 7.62x39 was about the slowest round that work. One guy reported good results with the 17 Rem and the 204 Ruger. (Isn't that a rimfire, very fast, but still a rimfire, and a small bullet too as I recall.) Another guy said 2000 fps or more was more important than caliber. Only one person mentioned range. He said 25 yards but that was a smaller charge.
Now I just need to find somebody who has the appropriate rifle I can borrow. Maybe my nephew. Maybe my boss but he's a big game hunter. Hey DWA, do you have a rifle that will work? I've got a stock 10/22 with a small scope. Maybe with some hypervelocity ammo it might work. But it would be nice to have a couple of options.

Blacktop, you realize you are contributing to the delinquency of an adult (at least in years), right?
Just ordered 24 1/4lb targets of the pistol tannerite. Cost is $52 plus shipping from the manufacturer. Should be here next week.
If anyone is interested, they are not listed on their website. You have to call them, 1-877-744-1406. They sell them in packages of 12 for $26 plus shipping.
I think I will blow up some tax returns. Bwaahhaawaahaa!
