Hello all,
Haven't been on here in quite a while. I recently came to acquire a 44 barrel that was assumed to be for a Palmer 445 SM. I have a Monson 445 and the barrel to frame threads are different.
My question is, was there a change in the thread from Monson to Palmer models?
Or
Is this a 44 mag and not a 445 barrel.
Monson barrel thread is .657 OD and 32 TPI
New barrel is .685 OD and 40 TPI
Thanks in advance

I don't think that they changed thread pitch or diamter between factories. I think you possibly have a barrel tube for another caliber. I don't know it 44 and 445 used different diameter and different threads. Did you measure the bore? I'm wondering if its not a 41 mag or some thing.

A 44 (445) round fits in the forcing cone end of the barrel. I am getting about .429-.430 on the front end so it is definately a 44 barrel. The retaining nut thread is the same as all the other big frame barrels. Checked the frame end thread on my 357 SM and it is the same as the 445 SM. Both are Monson. Though I had another barrel for the 445. Oh well, would like to know what it actually is, for future use or passing on to someone who might need it.

I "believe" somewhere in the past it was confirmed with Keith at DW that 44 and 445 barrels interchange. However as we all know there are several mystery's concerning DW that we have yet to understand. Also if your 357 SM and 445 SM have the same frame threads something is up, maybe a conversion of some type? Do you know the history of these guns? Try emailing Keith, even though the DW plant is under renovation maybe he can still answer a few questions.

Its raining here today so I got out my Craftsman thread pitch gage and my Frankford Arsenal digital calipers and decided to do some measuring of the large and supermag barrels. I'll post my results below. All measurements made at frame end of barrel and inside forcing cone.
CALIBER Thread Diameter Pitch ID at forcing cone
357SM .657 32TPI .357
375SM .686 32TPI .371
41Mag .656 40TPI .417
414SM .656 40TPI .417
44Mag .686 40TPI .426
445SM .686 40TPI .426
45Colt .688 36TPI .450
Maybe someone with the other large/supermag frame guns (360, 460) could post up their results. That would give a nice table of values for future use. Also some additional info on the calibers I listed would be good as a cross check.
I tried to put a 41 mag barrel into a 44mag frame and it just dropped right thru to the cylinder. I tried putting a 44 mag barrel on a 41 frame, it would'nt even fit into the frame to try to thread, was too big. Tried a 357Max barrel into a 41 mag, wouldn't thread in as pitch was different. Tried putting a 357 SM barrel into a 44 mag frame, just dropped thru the frame hole.
One intersting thing I did note, the barrel on my 414 SM SRS-1 is stamped 41 Cal. 1:18/SS. None of the other barrels is stamped at all. Wonder why they did this?
Cricket, what you described in your first post would seem to indicate that your gun frame is threaded for 357Supermag and the barrel you have is for a 445 Supermag. I wonder if some prior owner had a custom barrel made for a 357 max and had the cylinder rechambered to shoot 445SM? The data you gave seems to point in that direction. The barrel you are trying to install is in fact a 445 by the sounds of it.

Guys, I have no knowledge of thread size on the barrels and only one Mod. 15 but let me offer this. Would it make logical sense to use different thread sizes and pitch for the different calibers to prevent getting the wrong barrel on the right caliber? I should think that 357 Ma. and 357 Max barrels would interchange but think what could happen if you put a 41 Mag on a 44 Mag. I don't know if this is a solution to the OP's question but just a thought.
And no I didn't stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Actually a 357 mag (14-2, 15-2) are small frame guns and the 357Max is a supermag frame, the barrels aren't even close in size. The Max barrel dwarfs the 357mag tube. They actually did make different threads and diameters to prevent an accidental mix up that would end badly. The OP actually has a rechambered 357max with a custom barrel tube in 445 SM.

I read your post, Scorpio, mine was just a thought. I did read your figures.

Many thanks to Scorpio, he has solved the mistery. I got the 445 from a guy selling his late fathers collection. The old guy had put a 445 cylinder in the 357 max frame and had a 44 mag barrel rethreaded to fit the frame. I will have EWK do the same with an 8" blank and I'll be in business. Got the 10" set up that came with the gun, was just trying to drop back to 8".
Thanks for all the replys and head scratching.
