This is one of the best and cheapest ways to build a really nice Bench Rest. It's very simple and ingenious to build. The only thing I would change on it is the stiffener board on the bottom that runs perpendicular to the table. It should run long ways [top to bottom] or you could make it in a T-design. Check out this simple video. It's really worth watching and it's short.

How about under $5...
I built these for my kids because none of my rifle rests went low enough for them to use properly.
Weights from the goodwill, a few pipe fittings, and some Aluminum U channel from the shed...
If I need to make severe height changes, we just change the pipe length.
One of these days I'll get them painted up and attach the leather bench bags.

Looks like he did a nice job on it. If I go somewhere there is no tables
I use a rest on the hood of the ol'Ford...and it looks it too

I was going to say a .357 Max and .445 would melt the paint on the hood of your truck. I did that one time with a .44 black powder revolver pistol. Unfortunately 2 rounds went off at the same time [chain reaction]. I had powder soot all over the hood. I thought I had blown a hole in the hood. It all wiped off and the pistol was not hurt either. I had just had the pistol re-blued too.

That's a great idea. There is always a cheaper and efficient way to do things. The more money you save on these things the more money you have for ammo.
Making these benches would be right up L.B.'s alley.

Here is one of the cheapest ways to make sand bags. In this case rice bags that will do the job with a pant's leg.

And one that would fit well with Shootist gun rest.

I built a shooting bench using the rugged buddy sawhorse legs. I made the table a little bigger than average. I used 7 ply birch plywood. It's a little heavy, but really stable and solid. I cut two square slots on the opposite side to hold a couple of guns in the standing position and I cut a handle slot to carry it. It does the trick. It's better than my other portable table. I painted it with Pilgrim Red deck stain.

When I first looked at that photo, my thoughts were:
1) Add a mounting point pushing out from the front for the chrono (one less tripod?)
2) Add a second mount on the left for the spotting scope (another tripod bites the dust?)
3) Mount it on 4 wheels, stick a Hemi in it, and drive that sumbitch to the range (because, well, it's a Hemi?)
Seriously, sometimes I look for the overly elegant solution to the problem that does not exist, I think your shooting bench is very cool!
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
