Since I'm sure I can find more than one .44mag and Clint Eastwood (yes, yes, I know it was a S&W #29 but who cares? .44mag is great nonetheless) fan on this site I thought I'd mention this. I was just looking at movie listings for my local theater in Manchester, CT and saw that the original "Dirty Harry" movie from 1971 will be shown on 11/3/2013. I'm not sure if it's being shown nationwide, but I'm going to try to see it. That movie is the reason I went shopping for a .44mag which lead to me finding my DW. I'm tickled pink that it's back out.

I haven't heard if they will play this on the big screen in my area, but between last night & tonight, I did manage to watch all 5 Dirty Harry flicks in a row.
Do ya feel lucky? Well, do ya, PUNK??
BTW, I've heard (read) it told that most of the gun scenes in the original Dirty Harry movies used a S&W 57 .41 Mag instead of a 29, due to the unavailability of the model at the time. Kinda lame, but that's typical Hollywood...lame!

Yeah, occasionally I see one of the cable channels running all of the movies back to back. I've managed to get through 3 of them before needing to turn it off to do chores or the like. Someday I'll find the time to watch it all the way through. Maybe someday in the winter during a snowstorm. That would be nice.

There was an article in, I think, American Handgunner, a few months back, in
which the author interviewed one of the screenwriters of "Dirty Harry" and he
laid to rest the notion that one of the early guns in the movie was a Mod 57.
He said all the guns used ON SCREEN were Mod 29's, which were made up of
spare parts at the Smith & Wesson factory, as whole guns were hard to come
by at the time. In fact, I've heard that, due to low sales, Smith was thinking of
dropping the Mod 29 from inventory. Guess that movie got that idea outta their
heads real quick, huh?

Actually, if you check Wikipedia's article on the 29 it says pretty much what Hartlock just said. There are references all over any article about the topic to the movie causing such demand that the factory couldn't keep up. I can't speak to that exactly as I was just an apple in my parent's eyes when the movie came out, but I do know that decades later it still had the same effect as it caused me to get mine.
