Some have called me a shooting snob. But I am sure a few of you older mature shooters have experienced this. You go shooting with a couple of buddies whom you know are as safety minded as you. And one buddy brings his cousin who brings his buddy whom you have never seen, let alone having ever seen the cousin. Well one or the other or both bring their guns. And then it happens. Accidental discharge, waving the muzzle around unsafely, etc. You know know where I'm going with this. I have been known to pack up my toys and say for everyone's sake as well as their own, "Take a firearms safety course, I'm going home". I have gotten to the point I just don't shoot with anyone anymore. I have a few very dedicated and disciplined friends that I shoot with. And I only shoot with them. I have over the years met individuals that owned guns and seemed very knowledgeable. But when you got them on the range they were a train wreck waiting to happen. I have had a few get insulted when my friends or I would point out their potentially hazardous mistakes. I always keep an eye on the newbie. Some call it "Micro Managing". My point being is, and I say this all the time. I don't care if you can knock an owl off a phone pole at 200 yards with a .32 derringer in a sandstorm. If your not safe I won't be around you. I wont stand "Hot Dogging" or unsafe gun handling.
I guess I'm just a snob.

Tough love is necessary sometimes. I did it with the wife-unit, she wasn't very happy at first (and the daughter was ready to send me packing). But later she apologized, and continues to thank me for starting here from the very beginning of gun safety. Funny thing, when I got here her new .38spl, I had an accidental discharge (trying to uncock it), but everything was pointed downrange (private range so was clear). She noticed this.
What concerns me is how many "cousins" and their buddies have conceal carry permits.

My pet peeve is "flagging your buddy". I will jump down the throat of anyone who flags me; loaded or not. Speaking of loaded- never have you and your firearm loaded at the same time....
You're not a snob- just cautious. It makes good sense- these things can kill ya...
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Dantanna if you're a snob I'm an A-hole. I will not shoot or hunt with anyone except my brothers and 1 friend who grew up with us and his father was also a cop. I allowed a cousin to go with us on a rabbit hunt and he did ok, just ok to suit me and my brothers. Next time he brings a friend and we just told him, sorry cuz. He was pissed you know but too bad so sad. Lo and behold my cousin and his friend go deer hunting together and my cousin got shot, because his buddy shooting uphill from another field and shot my cousin in the leg, while he is in the stand. I mean for real... where the heck did this frwak grow up... fortunately, he was smart enough to call 911 after hearing the screams... Sorry, you ain't no snob brother.

I was at the range about a year ago and the gentleman next to me was showing off his newly acquired Colt Python. This thing was beautiful 6 inch nickel with original grips. When the range went hot he steps up to the bench and picks up said python loads six 357 magnums and proceeds to shoot. After his first round the muzzle flips all the way up and the guy is staring down the barrel! He does this for all six rounds! When he is done shooting his six he turns to me and my buddy with his finger on the trigger pointing the python at me chest level and asked where the garbage was. I promptly grabbed the gun from him and dumped the empties out and informed him that I tend to shoot back when people point guns at me. This was all in the 5 mins we were there. I packed up walked to the range master told him what had happened got my refund and left.
Needless to sayiI was not very happy.

Makes me think a range owner maybe should qualify his patrons. Just not sure of the legalities. I'd think it was a good idea.

Great post. I have a very small select circle of friends that I trust being around firearms with. Other than those folks I'm cautious of anyone whom I've not vetted personally. I'm sure most of you fine folks on this very forum actually know how to utilize that gray stuff behind your eyeballs. Given the chance to shoot alongside any of you and no offense meant I'd be skeptical of you initially as should you be of me.
That is why whenever possible I tend to try and shoot on private ranges where I know exactly whom has access and control of. When at public ranges I tend to not enjoy myself as I'm more paranoid about all the potential yahoos whom might be present.
Like an example given already I've had someone zero me with a pistol except it was still loaded at a local public range. I went off the deep end on the guy about it. The owner that day was probably saying to himself FML as he raced out of his office to intervene. I promptly packed up and have never been back to that location and never intend to. There are a very select few ranges in my area where there are range officers that actually do watch the patrons and call out folks on violations. Many in this area unfortunately operate on the "common sense" police yourself approach and that tends to be where you have to watch out for the lowest common denominator types. YMMV
Op, your not a gun snob. Your being very smart sir.

I think I'm pretty careful about Range Safety, I still remember a time that my son called me out on an unsafe practice, and he was right.
A fair number of years ago, he was called to a Captains Mast hearing (USCG) by a new Academy graduate on whom he had called a range shutdown for unsafe behaviors. CO heard all sides on the incident, looked the newby in the eye, and said "you have a great Gunners Mate running these qualifications, he did the right thing, and you need to learn everything you can from him"
A few weeks later, they went out for a steak dinner, he and she are still good friends.
Any mistake can be fatal, expect nothing less than perfection.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I was taking the required course for the CCL here, and while doing the mandatory range time, fellow student shot through and across the dividers between shooters. She was having trouble cocking her pistol, held it close to her body pointed sideways while having her finger on the trigger. Close! Know whose next to you.

We had a similar thing happen here but instead of a student it was an instructor.......not only was he an instructor he had just finished saying that "all guns are loaded " He missed a student by about 2 inches through a table. This was his second negligent discharge in a class room in a two week span. He was reported to the state and his certification to teach was revoked.

I occasionally would tell "Anti-Gunners" that I agreed with their views. "The only ones that should be allowed firearms were the military, the police and me." And a lot would smile and nod their heads yes. Lol. But after reading this ......hmmm!
Type in "Stupid People With Guns" on YouTube. A buddy told me he went to an outdoor shooting range once that had no range master. He saw at the end of the range a couple of guys smoking a joint and were bump firing an AK-47. He left and called the law. He did not know what happened after that.
